Title: Mad Max Fury Road
Post by: Chesuncook on October 28, 2012, 09:50:13 AM
A great movie series is continuing next year. Some good "Prepper Porn" as I've heard Jack call the like. :) The king of post-apocalyptic fiction as far as I'm concerned. I searched the forum and didn't see anyone had mentioned it, so I thought I would throw up this topic for any fans of the series to discuss. If I duplicated a previous topic, I apologize, I just didn't see it. Different actor in the lead role however...don't know how that will work.

Sit seems that Brit Actor Tom Hardy will play Max Rockatansky (aka Mad Max)......he's a great actor but I would have rathered an Aussie play the role given its an Australian movie series set in Australia.  Someone like Sam Worthington from Terminator Salvation & Clash of the Titans would have been a great choice.

Anyway it will be interesting to see where they will take the series with "Fury Road".  There was talk that the movies production was in trouble but things seem to be progressing with filming actualy commencing back in July in Namibia.

The title suggests it will be a return of those awesome high octane V8 interceptors and car scenes of the original movie....but if this is a sequal to Mad Max 3, I don't know how it will all work as I thought that gasoline (petrol) had all but disappeared.

Bring on 2013!

The original was an Australian movie taking place in Australia and Max was played by an American, so why does it matter?

I think you'll find that Mel Gibson whilst born in the US, migrated with his family to Australia when he was young.  He was raised and educated in Australia and I'm pretty certain still holds an Aussie Passport. Perhaps we can say that he is an Australian-American which still gives him more 'local' cred that the new guy playing Max.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter as you say, as long as the movie is great.

He has American and Irish citizenship.

But that is worth about as much as a blade of grass. As you have said, let's hope it's good.

I heard that initially they were filming in Silverton, NSW but there was so much rain there that year that it looked too green.  Finally it was slowing them down so much they went to Namibia.

I went to the Mad Max museum in Silverton in 2011, expensive and small but with a run down kitsch quality that made it worth every penny.  http://www.silverton.org.au/madmaxmuseum.html

That is really cool. That guy is definitely into Mad Max to go as far as he did with that museum! Was the Interceptor authentic?

no.  He clearly marks his artifacts as authentic (from the movies) or reproductions.  A few of the smaller vehicles from Beyond Thunderdome are in the museum and a few costumes.  He has some authentic scripts and a lot of official studio photographs (you know how the studio has a still photographer running around taking pics of the whole production process?  He only has a few artifacts from Road Warrior and Mad Max.  The Interceptor is a reproduction as I recall.

Cant wait. I saw road warrior like a dozen times in the theater back in the 80"s. I loved that opening scene with that blower humming and the V8 roaring.

It's a beautiful trailer, can't wait to see it!

Since Terminator IV's mess, I always worry about action series reboots turning out to be over-slick but ultimately storyless movies.  But hey, I'm good for at least one movie ticket, and if it turns out to be good I'm there three more times and standing in line for the blu-ray come Christmas time.  In the meantime...

Release date slated as May 15, 2015.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1392190/

Quote
An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There's Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

Here's the current trailer. It's been out for 3 months now.

I'm not fully certain, but it looks like it's going to be set in the USA instead of Australia. (I might be wrong. I just hear way too many American accents in this trailer is all.)

Notice in the first 10 seconds of the trailer we see a rather harmless little desert lizard in the foreground. He has 2 heads, so I guess that lizard is a radioactive mutation.

Mad Max came out when I was in my late teens.  I really enjoyed it, though, it didn't impress me as much when I watched it again a few years ago.  I am still definitely looking forward to the reboot.

Here's when I say oo - oo - oo!

If you go to 01:13 and hit "pause"--they are holding him down and tattooing him. It seems he has been captured and is now a slave. The tattoo is an extensive list of information about him --like a "product label" so that (my guess?) when they sell him at the auction block, all the information is written right there.

Included in the information is that his blood is Type 0-

Didn't you guys say that the "299 Days" series included enslaving people who were O- and selling them to the highest bidder? Or was it some other future dystopia that championed that notion??

Just which sci-fi/future dystopia was the first to conceive of the idea of Type O- people being valuable in a post-SHTF story?

It just means that knowledge of my O- status is a local OPSEC matter! ;D

Back to Mad Max, I am all in for when this movie gets within 40 miles.

heres a YA/future dystopian novel published in 2013. called Orleans is a post-katrina-ish tale.

http://bitchmagazine.org/post/new-book-orleans-race-blood-type-review

in it a fever sweeps through the human race. people divide themselves into tribes based upon blood types.

sorry for lack of capital letters. i have a kitty sleeping on my lap and my left hand is under his head

eta

unable to find any other stories w/ universal blood donor as plot element.

is 299 Days the first to do this or not?

From the book description:
Quote
Orleans is set in the years after the fatal Delta Fever has decimated the south, causing the government to first quarantine and then cut off the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas, leaving those still within those areas to fend for themselves.
Just like in the real Katrina, Mississippi got left out of the story!

Karma for not disturbing kitty.

I just got done with a friendly PM exchange with Heavy G.

His story has no mention of Type O- blood. :)

So that question is now resolved in my mind. And it also makes me feel more free to "borrow" that plot element for myself.

I honestly do not recall where I read about that one in the past. But it was a message forum discussion somewhere (I thought it was here) where someone mentioned a future dystopia where people with Type O- blood were deemed valuable enough to capture and hold prisoner for their blood. I have been tempted to incorporate it into my story, but hesitated for a long time. Now I think I will be a little bolder about it.

And as one parting comment about plagiarism: a lot of writers don't always recall where the heck they pick up these tidbits and idea, but such brilliant little nuggets and story fodder offerings can be sneaky little buggers, seeping into a writer's imagination and taking hold. And then the hesitation comes from the dread fear of asking: "Has this been done before?"

There is already another thread titled Mad Max Fury Road.  Is it worth merging the topics because I am sure it will gather legs as the movie gets closer to release and more trailers come out.  Just a thought!!!

For those eager to see Mad Max Fury Road, it will hit the big screens on 15 May and it looks awesome from the trailers on online.   From the three most recent trailers, we start to get a better picture on the plot and it confirms that real stunts, mayhem and destruction of vehicles wins out over CGI.

I agree with shambo above. The action was full throttle most of the way through - might be one of the top action films of all time. Exciting, original, and very well done.
