Show Off Your Archery Gear
« on: September 22, 2008, 11:44:59 PM »
Here's some of mine. I'm a longbow/recurve guy.

Hickory flu flu's with six feather fletchings & fake sinew wrap on the leading edge.  Flat white krylon crown dip.  They have 200 gr. Ace Hex Head (bunny busters) on the working end.

Bear Alaskan longbow, it's 50 something years old.  Gransfors Bruks hatchet in an old deer stand.

Some arrows I built for my wife.  They are douglas fir & tipped with .38 casings for bludgeons.

My wife shooting her old lemonwood longbow with no shelf.

Me shooting an old Browning recurve.

So, show me what you shoot.  Stickbow or wheelie bow, let's see 'em.  If anyone's in our neck of the woods, you're welcome to come shoot with us no matter what you shoot. ;)

Nice pics! I'll have to get my bow and and get some. It's a Ben Pearson Shadow (compound). I bought it when I was but a young one. Had it restrung a few years ago. I've not shot it in so many years the fletchings are falling off my arrows. Damn..

Get it out & knock the dust off.

I'm going to put together a few how-to ideas for gearing up & putting together some of your own equipment eventually.  Fletching, making arrows, etc.  just basic stuff to hopefully get some folks interested in archery.

So you shoot rabbits with the blunt tip?  Or am I missing something?

I tried to get into archery in high school.  I bought a compound when I joined the archery club.  In the weeks before the club started I practiced every day after school.

I got to do one thing with the club and I broke my foot the next week.  So I had to quit the club and I never really got back into it.

I have been thinking about getting back into it though.  Listening to the podcast made me think about it harder.

Rabbits, squirrels & I once killed a groundhog with one.  Groundhog is a bit big really, but I had him dead to rights & hit him in the head.  It's a small game head FTMP.  Squirrels can be a bit hard to kill with blunts sometimes, for that reason I frequently use old broadheads on squirrels.

I went out and bought a PSE deer hunter compound bow for around $220, it had a site, then I bought a peep site and a mouth marker and the guy set the whole thing up. He had me shoot a few arrows and adjusted the site and set it to around 55 pounds or so. After I bought the arrows and a mckennzie shot blocker the whole things ended up being around $375.

I am not sure if I just go out in the woods and target practice if it's legal, I live in a condo, but there is some woods behind where I live and a big field that is part of a farm, but the farmhouse is far away. I could go out there really early in the morning or something, and put a cloth over the bow so people in my condo don't see me carrying a bow around. Other than that I could possibly try to drive places like conservation land for target practice or shoot at my mother's house when she is not home ..

Yesterday I bought a small back packing axe (gerber back paxe), a lockblade knife with 3.5 inch blade, a compass, several bags of popcorn, and 2 pounds of cashews. Between that and all the dried food I bought last week I think I may hold off on buying any more stuff until I start my new job soon.

I'd post some pictures of the bow, but I left my adapter to transfer the pictures to my laptop back at my condo and I'm up at my truck camper for a few days.

Congrats on your new bow.  Remember to check the laws with your local municipalities to be sure there aren't any prohibitions against shooting the bow in your mother's yard or wherever it is you decide to shoot.  Always be aware of what's behind your target, I can't stress this enough.  It only takes one accident to really screw up your, or someone else's life.  Safety is your #1 priority.  I wouldn't try to hide the bow, that might just peak curiosity even more.  When you're able, buy a quality case for it.  That will protect it & allow you to carry it without people giving you the stink eye.

You should be able to contact your local hunting/natural resources/dept. of conservation to determine the legalities of shooting on conservation or public land.  They probably have a website with links to contacts.  I'd start there.  Ideally you'll want some place with a lot of space.  How about a local archery shop, they frequently have someplace to shoot.  It might even be beneficial to join a shooting league if there are any near you.  That would allow you to practice, learn & get feedback from more experienced shooters.

Yea thanks, maybe I'll call some archery shops or ask a guy I know who lives nearby. When he goes to shoot carp, he just grabs his bow and walks down the street to the river, pretty much a suburban area a few towns over. It wouldn't surprise me if he is not going by the book 100% though. I'll ask the cops in my mother's town or call the town hall about shooting in yards or on conservation land.

I kind of like doing stuff outdoors in the woods. If I have to get in my car and drive 20 minutes or a half hour to an indoor archery range, I'd probably prefer to just go out in the woods someplace and target practice. That's how I like to practice kung fu as well, in a field someplace, though it ends up I don't get to the academy as often as I should, they seem often surprised that I have kept up pretty well with the stuff I know because I do practice.

Reading this thread made me grab my old bow and sling 50 arrows.  I readjusted my sites, I was shooting about 3 inches right at 20 yards and a little low.  I must have knocked it off.  Now I'm center of mass and about an inch low at 20 yards with really good groups.  AT 30 yards I'm still low about an inch and center of mass although my groups open up to about 3 inches.  At 40 yards my groups are too large to shoot confidently right now.  I should have been using my bow more this year.  I'm gonna try and launch 50 arrows a day till I'm under 3 inches at 40.  I wouldn't shoot an animal right now at 40 unless I really needed the meat.  Also I don't shoot my bow with my glasses and my eyes have gotten weaker, my peep is almost at my eyeball, my string loop touches my nose when I anchor.  I may have to shorten my string and adjust my anchor to shoot with glasses.

I have a fletching kit that I haven't used in a few years.  I still shoot aluminum Easton XX78's in 2312 in a world that has gone carbon.  I haven't had as much luck building my own carbon arrows and I have with the XX78's.  All the arrows that I have now I built myself but I don't have a problem with prefletched and knocked Eastons, I just cut them to my length by hand with a tube cutter.  If I ever switch to carbon I'll have to buy a cutter.

I made this in the 80's.  I was the archery range director for a scout summer camp in high school.

I never thought to ask if it was OK to have the machete (you can see the handle sticking out of the top, it has a built in sheath).  The takedown recurve on the side is a 55lb Fred Bear.  The other side held one of the old radio shack walkie talkies in case I had to call the medic.  These days it holds a weatherproofed 2 meter rig.
