Man I LOVE shooting a bow with my Boys.
« on: February 21, 2010, 02:36:01 PM »
My boys and I did our first 20 yard 300 point target tournament shoot today.  My 11 year old got 1st place for his age (And has only shot 20 yard practice 1 time) and my 10 year old (Who has never shot 20 yards before) got 2nd place.  Its just amazing to watch those two little boys, their technique and follow through on the shots puts me to shame (One of those do as I say boys, not as I do situations LOL).

I only shot 154 but considering of the 20 adults, I was the only one shooting a $28, 35 year old sightless bow surrounded by $500 to $1000 rigs shooting high 290's, I didn't feel too bad :).  These guys (And Gals, one lady shot 298, awesome job) are amazing to see something that requires the mechanical aptitude and coordination that shooting bows takes and shoot the kind of accuracy bench rest shooters get is just incredible.

Since it was my first indoor standing target shoot I realized something else today.  I don't care one bit about shooting indoor targets.  I felt so much better trekking through the outdoor course in sub zero weather and 6 inches of snow with my boys shooting 3D targets in a simple hit or miss the last time.

Not that target shooting wasn't fun, good place to practice technique,  but there is just something slightly more familiar and satisfying in the outdoor stuff.

I cannot wait to build my long bow.

That's awesome.  Getting your boys shooting is a good way to spend quality time with 'em.

I love a good bow-hike myself, stump shooting along the way.  Great stuff.

Good for you Doc!

This is how I got involved in archery at age 6.  My father was a member of an archery club.  Like most such clubs, it was very family oriented.

These are some of my most fond memories....

Can't wait to see how your bow comes out.

If you are not now a member, look into the Primitive Archer forum.

http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php

There is a large number of people building primitive (Bent Stick) bows.

As far as field shooting goes:

There is 3D animal shoots .....

There are lots of different venues to try.

Archery Trap shooting.... Flu-Flu arrows and Frisbees...

Etc.

Take Care,

Steve

That looks like fun.  Love the horseback simulation. :)

The boys and I did our first 3D shoot Last month.  30 targets, below 0 Weather  6 to 8 inches of snow and we had a BLAST.  (Kids got a kick out of me shooting a bear in the nuts, fortunately my 11 year old hit it in the kill zone and "Saved us all" LOL

I am finally starting to free up some time.  I will be in Missouri for a week in March and then I will have some free time (Finally) to get started on it.

I am in the middle of building some Arrows for the Cub Scouts Arrow of light graduation ceremony.  I was amazed at how easy it is to straighten them.  I figured you'd have to steam and press them and all kind of things, but just a little hand manipulation and presto, nice straight arrow.

What do you normally make your arrows out of?  These are not shooting arrows so I used some wooden dowels.  I think they would be to weak to shoot.  But I don't have a clue.

Thanks

Doc

I hunt with Aluminum arrows, but make my knock around arrows out of Port Orford Cedar.

I also make my own strings.
