Now the work begins as rescue comms are very heavy this AM and there are limited personnel to route into the area. Coast guard is particularly busy as Hams route efforts by GPS coordinates based on address locations (I use Google Earth for GPS location) People just expect their problem is most important and want help right away. I note much more use of internet for communications when compared to my work during Katrina.

The sanitation and cleanup will take months and services will take weeks to rebuild and repair as water, even city water,is not potable and the 'system' will take some time for water to be concidered safe.

I was hearing from ham operator named Bill, sounded like he was in the Florida keys. Basically it sounded like he only had his radio let. No power, no water, etc

Pinellas County, which includes St. Petersburg, suspended its response to 911 calls at around 8:30 Sunday night, when sustained winds exceeded 40 miles per hour,  calls were piling up.four cardiac arrest at the same time for instance, and they had the stand down until late Sunday night. Another reason everyone should have basic first aid and CPR.

Jay's family got through with minimal damage.  They have to replace a couple of roof tiles and a gate.

For a while, they were directly in the center of the storm's path.

Oh, and now I'm crushing heavily on Mike Bettes from The Weather Channel.  :-*   ;D

I have a sister in Jacksonville (northeast FL) who came through okay (although last I heard from her was this morning and it was still too windy to safely go outside and check for damage).  Downtown Jacksonville and lots of areas along the St Johns River are underwater, many roads and bridges are closed, lots of trees and powerlines are down, but they seem to have escaped major destruction.  Peak wind gust at the airport was 86 mph.

PolarBear made it through, both his BOL and his normal home are fine. No wifi or power but good at the house. He sent me pictures and it doesnt look like a leaf is out of place.

It was kinda unique that a dolphin washed up in another man's front yard though. And many zoo animals went to the local.county jail.

All family & friends over in FL are OK.  Beyond weirdly low tides and a little wind & rain in the Panhandle, no real effects.  :)

Glad to hear about PolarBear.  He was in the thick of it.

Rescue ,will turn to recovery in a day or two ,only 5 fatalities that I know of,so far. The islands will take more time to know about as other governments are involved.

- key largo: worried about highway 1 which connects help and supplies.they have no cell service, no electricity, and no water

- Miami: major problem is two construction cranes are down and thousands of trees. Trying to get roads clear. 75% no power

- Marco island: 3-4 ft storm surge. They are flooded, main powerpole is down

- Naples, major debris. Power is out to most areas and will take weeks to restore

- Tampa: ongoing flooding

- Jacksonville: ongoing flash flooding alert for downtown. Evacuations for people trapped by water

Huge thanks to Cedar for passing everything on and staying in touch. You rock lady!

I'm busy cleaning up at work and have little access to WiFi.

The good news is my powers back on. I'll post more when I can and give a breakdown in a separate post.

The gas is one of the big issues here.  It IS coming back and I've seen even the lines go down, but given how many people bugged out, I'm not surprised.

We got off really easy here.  I'd say work had just Tropical Storm damage.

We have most of the big debris picked up, but we have to get all the other stuff.  What amazes me is the difference people are having in their outlook of things.  Most have been going out of their way to help and clean up.  Others are wanting to wash their boats so the can sell them or wanting hot water heaters picked up that they had replaced without permits.  One guy was insistent that we had the ability to get the power company to fix the area in the park first!  (I wish I had that power)

People are using the pool even though it is full of leaves and I haven't checked the chemical balance yet.  (Too be honest, I'm afraid of hyper chlorinating the pool for burning anyone sneaking in.  Some have copies of the key so locking the gate is futile)

There aren't many troops/national guards around, but I have seen a convoy of them headed towards Naples.  (I'd rather see them where they are more needed anyway.)  There was a curfew, but to be honest, I don't know how it could work.  All you have to say is that you're coming back and show your ID

There's also been crime of course, but not like when Hurricane Charlie hit.

Right now my main goal is trying to get work cleaned up, get things back to normal at home, try to calm my coworkers and family down when they have their break moment while trying to minimize collateral damage when I have mine.  (I know eventually it will happen.  If I'm lucky it will happen when I'm alone.)

It took two and a half days for supplies to begin arriving on the MS coast after Katrina.  That was with largely intact roads and bridges connecting back to the rest of the CONUS, all that had to be done was to clear the debris and let the trucks roll in.  Imagine how difficult it must be to get supplies to these affected islands.

Weird facts of Irma's effects:

The wind shook the light poles su much that the bulbs unscrewed and fell to the ground.

The pressure in the sewer pipes, caused by the rains no doubt, back-flushed the Diatomatious Earth collection bag and emptied it's contents inside the pool shed.  (The collection tank is not water proof at the bottom.  I have no idea why it didn't just spray out there.)
