Title: What do these letters mean? SHTF TEOTWAWKI BOB BOL
Post by: Heavy G on November 17, 2008, 09:25:08 AM
We use lots of acronyms like SHTF, EBR, TEOTWAWNI.

There are so many new people to this forum and the podcast that I thought it would make sense to have a glossary thread.  We don't want to exclude people by using acronyms.

So I'll kick it off:

SHTF = Sh!t Hits the Fan (order breaks down, things go crazy).  A variation is "Schumer" hits the fan in honor of anti-liberty Senator Chuck Schumer.

EBR = Evil Black Rifle (a substitute term for "Assault Weapon").

TEOTWAWKI = The End of the World as We Know It.

Add more terms.  These were the ones that I had wondered about before I found out what they meant.

Sometimes its good to explain exactly what we're talking about for the new people.

Disaster Matrix.
The basic concept that the most likely scenario of a survival situation you will face is first and foremost on an individual level.
Next on a household level, next on a neighborhood level, next on a local/city/county wide level, next regional level, then a state wide level and then a national level followed by a global level. Global being the least likely event.

Now for acronyms:
Remember folks, we're all adults here. If a phrase offends you or an acronym offends you, feel free to modify it!
So here's some acronyms and their meaning.

SHTF
Shit Hits The Fan
ALT: Stuff Hits The Fan
ALT: TSHTF=The Shit (Stuff) Hits The Fan

TEOTWAWKI
The End Of The World As We Know It
ALT: EOTWAWKI (drop the The)
This is a situation where the Fan is gonna take a heck of a long time to recover from the Hit

BOB
Bug Out Bag
A "bag" back pack, golf bag, guitar case, whatever used to hold the basics needed to survive 72 hours if the SHTF and you have to leave in a hurry.

BIB
Bug In Bag
A "bag" back pack, golf bag, guitar case, Tupperware box or whatever used to hold the basics needed to survive 72 hours if the SHTF and you can't leave where you are. (home, office, cubical, whatever)

BOV
Bug Out Vehicle
What ever you use to get from where you are to where you need to be in a SHTF scenario.

BOL
Bug Out Location
This is where you go when you can't stay where you were.
It can be a parking lot where your family agrees to meet in case of a SHTF.
Or it can be your cabin in the woods where you hide from the roving zombie masses.

That brings up a fun one.
Zombies!
Who or what are Zombies?
Zombies are the brainless ones who feed on the labor of others, the savings of others, the preparations of others, or the freedom of others.

Sheep/Sheeple
Those who allow themselves to be herded for the good of the collective.
Those who chant useless slogans instead of thinking.
Those who depend on their masters for all their needs.

So anyway, I hope this helps explain the weird letters and phrases you may see on our boards.

So, I have to know... on forums/sites like Zombie Hunters/Zombie Squad is that what they mean by Zombies? If so, that makes a lot more sense. I thought that was a site full of people who just had WAY TOO MUCH time on their hands. :)

Yes, and Zombies are also used as a general stand-in for disasters.

Doc,

" Cant Understand That, but I am not sure."  I don't think its that hard to understand:

Force + sharp object + intervening portion of a distal segment of the upper extremity --> boo-boo.

Or am I going off on a tangent again?

You flatter me, SW. The only chemistry I know I got through osmosis. Daughter-who-weaves-fences' husband works in solar cell r & d, and likes to chat with me. I have no freaking idea what a redox reaction is, so I just sit there and nod my head sagely, as befits my years, while he rambles on.....Actually, I graduated with a degree in Anthropology, two years before Lucy came out of the ground. I always wanted to either get into anthropology or archeology. I took geology classes because it kind of overlaps both, but it turns out you have to be smart for stuff like that. Who knew?  ;D

So did we ever figure out what CUT was?

Hare,

Archaeology is not all that its cracked up to be. Very little Indiana Jones, a lot of, "See that 5 gallon bucket of flint chips? Separate by type of flint, count them and try to figure out where the flint came from." After a couple of hours of that, your brain hurts.

Hobbs, RE: Indian name

I think I can have some fun with that. Let me see if I can diagram the family:

A few:

Yankee Delta: Yes, Dear; an endearing term of agreement with your significant other; a confidential code implying that you are kvetching at me like a nagging old housewife, and I don,t like it.

Sierra Hotel: S##t high, S##t happy, S##t happens.

Tango Yankee / Yankee Whiskey: Thank you / You're welcome; often abbreviated Tango / Whiskey

Berserkistan: Unnamed Central Asian countries where we aren't, doing things we didn't do. As in: "How was your trip? Where did you go?" "Good trip, went to Berserkistan." "Oh....." In other words, don't pursue this line of conversation.

Jetter: An individual who is fully cognizant of all the latest buzz words and acronyms, and doesn't hesitate to liberally sprinkle them into his conversations, much to the confusion and annoyance of anyone trying to make sense out of what this fool is trying to say.

Jars / Jugs: Male / Women Marines. CAUTION: Use these terms ONLY if you have earned the right to insult Marines.

MIL SPEC:
Military Specification; whenever the government / DOD orders something, it is manufactured to very detailed instructions covering design, materials, procedures, quality control, etc. For example, a knife made to MIL SPEC is the same whether Camillus makes it or Ontario makes it. On documentation and blueprints, the specification is referenced: MIL [alphanumeric code for that particular set of specs.] (see below)

MIL TF-P-41
Example of what a MIL SPEC looks like. This spec is completely bogus, however. What this "MIL SPEC" means is, "Make It Like The F&%$ing Print For Once". I wasted a half hour of research time before someone let me in on the joke.

Sierra Hotel: S##t high, S##t happy, S##t happens.

I first came across this one reading about Vietnam-era pilots (i.e. it may be older).  In their usage is was Sh#t Hot - meaning "good" - 'He's a real sh#t hot stick' = he's an excellent pilot.

On that note, there are a couple of others, but they don't really play much into day-to-day life:

Charlie Mike - Continue Mission (can be a real command or update, but can also be the equivalent of "Drive on; it don't mean nothing") e.g. "Negative on your extraction request, GD. Charlie Mike."
Oscar Mike - On the Move (status update from an element that is moving out) "Roger, HQ, we're Oscar Mike."

I just watched a WWII story about some bomber and fighter pilots a couple weeks ago and one of the pilots (I don't know his age), mentioned the Whole 9 Yards, had something to do with using up all their ammo.  I didn't pay too much attention, but that was the impression I got was he said that it had to do with running out of ammo or something along those line.

Originally "the whole nine yards" was a tailoring reference for haberdasheries.
A man's suit made from "the whole nine yards" was a fully lined suit with a vest, as opposed to a discount suit that used less cloth.
Later the phrase was picked up by gunners firing 9 yards of belt fed ammo, although I'm not sure but what that was a point of confusion on the part of the gunners seeing the older use of the phrase was already obscure.
Now days I hear people saying "the whole ten yards" as a football reference and have even heard arguments between drunks about which is correct, nine yards or ten.
Its kind of like the phrase, "In a pinch" which has been distorted by the History Channel into having its origins in Gold Rush California, rather than its much older use in reference to "pinching a purse" and therefore being "pinched" or "caught in a pinch", a form of theft in London circa 1700's.

I suppose TWAH.

Just to confuse it even more...  In the construction world they think the phrase comes from the amount of concrete in the transit-mix concrete trucks since some of them carry 9 cubic yards of concrete.  I've also heard the ammo version - the belted machine-gun ammunition for some fighter planes, when laid out prior to loading, measured 9 yards.

Funny how we all know what it means, even if the origins are murky!

EXPERT: ex'-pert, n. or adj. (Lat. ex = has been + Old Ger. spurt = little drip)

n. A loudmouth who is always correct in his assumptions and recommendations, who will not tolerate questioning his authority nor admit there might be other viable opinions or facts. The Expert is most often found on other forums, and to the uninitiated sounds most impressive. The Expert confuses anyone with the slightest knowledge of the topic at hand, who, in turn, are responsible for the inclusion of the  ??? and the  :wtf: smileys in "Post Reply" sections.

adj. The suggestions or recommendations given by an Expert. A prime example of "Expert Advice" is the posting of detailed instructions on how to remove or bypass safety devices on firearms.

EMT: USAF / RED HORSE specific equipment - Expresso Machine, Tactical: A compact, man - portable device used for the steam brewing of coffee, the steaming of milk, etc. in an austere or field environment.

The EMT device weighs approx. 1 kG, and occupies an area of approx. 1 ft3. The mechanism is externally powered by 110/120 VAC and serviced with Grade 100% Colombian coffee or higher.

While often thought to be primarily of MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreational) value, the primary purpose of the EMT is two - fold: firstly, the end product of the device is a mild to moderate stimulant known to induce peak mental efficiency in those Horsemen whose tasking precludes incorrect or less than timely decisions and / or actions; and secondly, to figuratively stick it in the eye of non - RED HORSE Airmen or other branches of the armed forces who like to think they know how to live in the field.

First hand experience indicates that there is nothing more satisfying than a Jamacan Blue Mountain Latte sipped from a canteen cup at the end of a long day moving dirt.

Indeed, LvsChant. It must be a medium-fine grind. Too coarse and there isn't enough surface area to fully expolite the beans. Too fine, and the grinds clog the holes in the basket and the EMT starts showing signs of excessive pressure - steam coming out of places it shouldn't, loud whistling noises, etc. Not good.

Sorry, back on topic.

There are a lot of military and ex-military on this forum, and more than occasionally, military jargon finds its way into the posts. This jargon can be confusing not only to those who have had no military experience, but to those whose experiences are in different branches of service. Hopefully, this post will assist the forum in understanding these often confusing, sometimes humorous terms.

Hurricane,

I understand where you are coming from. Many of the folks here have military experience, as well as living the civilian life style, and their acronyms reflect that former experience. "Fouled up" is a civilian term, describing civilian experiences; the military goes WAY beyond that, hence the stronger - and more accurate - terminology.

A couple of classic examples of this are the Granada intervention during the Reagan years, or the events at Desert One in the Carter era.

Hope this helps you to understand.

And even for the military, some of these are different depending on where you served.  For example, the R in FUBAR was Recognition when I was in Germany back in 89.  But the flyboys at McCord AFB in Washington in 92 (Bunch of great guys by the way) used Reality.

Hope this helps you to understand.

 ;D

Thanks, but I think it's more the fact that I was raised not to use that sort of language.
It's true I have since learned all these words, but I don't speak, or type, them.
If you know the word is going to be bleeped anyway, don't use it in the first place.

:( Showing my age I guess.

So, I have to know... on forums/sites like Zombie Hunters/Zombie Squad is that what they mean by Zombies? If so, that makes a lot more sense. I thought that was a site full of people who just had WAY TOO MUCH time on their hands. :)

ok, so this clears up so much, I was wondering what everyone's fascination with zombies were, I was like 'why are normal people so obsessed with a fictional thing' now i get it...thanks for clearing that up

WWYPTOTI: Why Would You Put That On The Internet?!? Refers to the stupid (or illegal) stuff that people post. From the prepping perspective, these posts usually involve when someone would use deadly force (usually not justified under any law or rules of engagement), or how they plan on setting booby traps on their property, or how most of us are ignoring the latest [tin foil hat] threat - stuff that will bring you up on someone's radar or bite you hard in the arse if the wrong people see it.

Fortunately, it's not needed too often here. :wut:

Hey Soupbone I have one word to update from your military translation chart.

The Airforce now calls their living quarters, Dorms including in basic training we lived in a "dormitory" = Large open bay with several bunks and lockers. Great list by the way!

My easy 2:

POG - People other than grunts.  Pronounced with a long "O"  Used by 0311 USMC infantry to describe everyone else.  Not a nice term.

FOBit.  Someone who talks shit all the time, but never leaves the forward operating base.  Like a hobbit, lives in a hole, never comes out because adventure is just too scary.

FOB - forward operating base.

Grunt - infantry - unique noise they make when they pick up a huge pack.

I came on these during my internet travels-

BBBB =  (the 4 firstaid B's) Breathing, Bleeding, Breaks and Burns. (order of diagnosis and treatment for casualties)
NESW = Never Eat Shredded Wheat. (method of remembering points of compass in clockwise motion)
SSSSSS = (the 6 stealth S's) Sound, Shape, Shine, Shadow, Smell, Silhouette. -
i.e.- Dont make unnecessary SOUND or noise
Break up your SHAPE with camouflage or cover
Dont let your kit items SHINE in the sun
Stay in SHADOWS
Dont use SMELLY perfumed soaps, aftershave, don't smoke, and take care with camp fires because  the cooking smells (and the smoke) will give you away.
Stay off the hilltops and ridgelines so you dont stand out as a SILHOUETTE

When I was dog sledding I could smell cigarette smoke up to two miles away, where the checkpoint was.

And even for the military, some of these are different depending on where you served.  For example, the R in FUBAR was Recognition when I was in Germany back in 89.  But the flyboys at McCord AFB in Washington in 92 (Bunch of great guys by the way) used Reality.
As a heavy junk guy who worked with Mates R often stood for Repair.
I'm surprised no one brought up the 6Ps, Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.
