Title: Saltwater treatment?
Post by: Heavy G on November 17, 2009, 09:40:03 AM
My BOL is on salt water.  Fresh water is not close (in the summer).

Is there a semi-affordable way to treat salt water for drinking?

Great question, I have not found a system that is practical or low cost, that would remove salt from the water.

The Berkey Water filters shouldn't be used to filter out salt, as salt will ruin the black berkey elements.

We would try to secure water in aquatanks 150 gallons of non-saltwater in order to have water for an emergency.

Here is what the aquatanks are with more information:

Distillation is the only way I know of, and that removes everything from the water and requires heat of some type. Of course, you get that great sea salt as a by product.

That is correct, Distillation removes all the good minerals that you need.

There are life boat systems that hand pump but it's not cheap.

How about setting up a passive evaporation draw from the salt water source?

That would work, and would sure beat having no drinking water at all, but it is distillation, and would still remove everything from the water.
