Title: Need Canned Wheat, Rice, Beans or Oats?
Post by: firetoad on December 02, 2008, 06:12:20 PM
To those that don't already know, there is a great resource for quick and cheap #10 cans of the following staples:

The cans are sold in six count cases and are free shipping!  Prices are very reasonable and this is a great starter resource for the beginner prepper or a great short term goto for "experienced" preppers.

I have purchased a number of cases from them and have always been pleased.  Without further ado, I present to you:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Distribution Services Home Storage (http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10151&categoryId=10002&langId=-1&cg1=14087&cg2=&cg3=&cg4=&cg5=)  (Also known as the LDS Catalog)

I am not a member of the LDS church, but I certainly respect their commitment to preparedness.

Hope this helps some fellow preppers!

Great source.  The price ($30.50 for 33lbs of hard red winter wheat) is very good, especially with free shipping.

Thanks!

very good post!!    Great product and pretty quick shipping.  Only problem is if you are trying to be "gray" is that there is writing all over the sides of the shipping box.  Only a problem if that is a concern to you

Thanks for posting, too bad they don't have a better selection of items.  Those staples are easy and cheap to store in 6 gallon buckets.

Just about any place that sells this type of product has their name emblazened along the outside. BePrepared.com, Mountain Brook Foods, Honeyville Grain.... My UPS girl and half a dozen FEDEX folk knows what is going on at my house.  Her I'll let in, the others....not so much.

My best friend sent me a huge box with BioHazard stickers all over it.  I got asked about that one :)

I kinda like those big "Extra Absorbency Adult Diapers" boxes I get at work :D

Oh that would be cool to have BioHazard stickers to put on boxes I send out for Xmas... But not cool when the men in dark suits and glasses show up to question me...

I know this is a very basic question but I am a city slicker:
Do I need any extra tools to make the hard red winter wheat into flour?

"Be Prepared" (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints preparedness store) will turn the boxes that they send your supplies in inside out so your orders are wrapped in plain brown wrapping at your request.  I not only ordered from them, but FEDEX delivered my first supply of goods to a house several streets over.  I, too, don't want to alert my neighbors, so I contacted "Be Prepared."  All of my shipments from that point on have been logo-free.

Response to City Slicker: You need a grinder that will turn the wheat into flour.  Not all grinders are alike.  Some are hand cranked (non-electric), some are electric, and some are "convertable."  Be Prepared can give you info on all types and make recommendations to you.

Good work 'ft'. I just purchased me a few cases to check them out.

Note: It's true they don't charge for shipping, but they do take sales taxes from several states including Texas...  :(

They are quick to ship!  I made a purchase on 11/30/08 (a Sunday) and received it on 12/8/08 (effectively a week later).  Not too bad for the price and free shipping!

Enjoy!

Just ordered the starter kit myself.  Now I need to buy a grain mill!  ;D

I have ordered and received the following:

Back To Basics Hand Grain Mill (http://beprepared.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_FP%20M100_A_name_E_Hand%20Grain%20Mill)

It seems to be a fairly well constructed unit.  I have not had a chance to test it yet, but was planning on trying it out this weekend with the kids.

+ 1 on this.  I've been thinking of getting Lehman's Best Grain Mill (http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=219&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=grain), but will wait to see your results.

I received my starter kit yesterday.  Fast shipping.

I'd post a pic but it looks the same as what's on their site.

I'm pretty happy with it, I would definitely prefer sterile shipping.  6 of those big cans are heavy, it's definitely a shelter in place type food storage deal.  My wife couldn't even lift the box.  I'm going to order from them again.

This is a link to a pdf of the 'LDS Preparedness Manual".  I'm not an LDS member either but great resource that can be printed out.

I just got my starter kit. Took a while to get to me, but they sent an email ahead of time to warn me of a delay. No big deal.

A couple of the cans were slightly dented, but again no big deal. They could have used a heavier box so it could better survive Fed-Ex handlers.

Says on the can that it will stay good for 30 years!

I'll definitely get more stuff from them.

Have any of you opened a can and eaten the oats or Beans?
I am going to order the beans and the Oats and Rice as they dont require Grinding.

If any one has a review of the above please forward to me.

As always
Thank you all for all the help
Scott

Now that we have a food sealer, I think I'll open a couple of cans and see what it's like. A few plastic lids for the cans are provided.

The beans are dry pintos, I can hear them rattling around in there when I shake the can. My wife says we can make refried beans with it. Some rice and totillas and we're set.

The wheat has a recipe on the can to make it into a hot cereal. Just boil and eat. My guess is it comes out like Farina or Ralston wheat cereal.

I'll give the wheat a try for breakfast and let all y'all know how it is.

We're also going to get a grinder and try making bread out of the wheat. Somebody gave me a baker's apron and I've been waiting to try it out!  ;D

We have been using that week through normal rotation for a year or so now for making wheat bread.  You'd be surprised how much wheat you go through just for sandwiches.  Anyway, I am a member and we can and purchase our own.

I have never seen any bad product.  I was a little surprised to see what I think were dirt clods in the pinto beans, but this is apparently a normal part of the process and the pinto beans are supposed to be soaked first anyway.  Before being canned, it arrives in plain-jane bags, most with markings from the LDS church, I presume from the LDS church farms or perhaps acquired on commodity markets.  The apples (I'm not sure if you can get those online) are or were TreeTop brand.

We use the rice regularly and it seems like normal, plain, good tastin' white rice.

We have ground the wheat and everything seems just fine with in.  The kids love the ground whole wheat flour!
