Title: State by State Conservation/Hunting/Fishing Resources
Post by: DeltaEchoVictor on September 28, 2008, 07:12:32 PM
Those of us who regularly spend time in the woods are probably aware of all the resources available to us.  I'm sure there are folks who either haven't spent much time utilizing their state's natural resources, or are thinking they might like to, but don't know where to begin.

With that thought in mind, I'd like this thread to be a starting point for our less experienced outdoor enthusiasts.  As regular users it's incumbent upon us to pass on a love of the outdoors.  I'll start by posting links for my conservation dept., I'd like others to post their own state's information.  If you'd prefer you can IM the links to me & I'll post it in this thread.

For Missouri residents this is a free magazine that can be ordered on-line.  It doesn't cost you a dime.  For those that live outside of Missouri, you can download it as a PDF file off the page I linked.

All these links can be found on the main page I linked first.

Please add your own state's opportunities & resources.

Funny story...The DNR (Department of Natural Resources) isn't very well liked by a lot of the true hunting and fishing population up here.  There was some guy that had some land along the interstate and put up a big honkin billboard that read "DNR = Damn Near Russia".
1.  Couldn't help but chuckle every time I drove passed it.
2.  Couldn't help but chuckle every time I though about the conservation officer that probably watched him like a hawk from opening day 'tlll season close.

If you look on the hunting section it can guide u to public lands to hunt, its all I have since I got out of the military and became a transplant to Virginia, Not like Ohio where my family hunted on friends of the families for generations...

Texas PWD has draw hunts for lots of critters, but the best chance is for
whitetail deer; adults have various options; cost is nothing to several hundred
dollars, depending on what you want.

Youths on the other hand are free; they just need an accopmanied adult
with a licesnse.

The more times you apply & not get drawn, you get preference points for future
applications.

There is also an annual hunting permit that gives you access to public and private (leased) lands for a variety of hunting opportunities.

My son got drawn for a youth hunt next month that will give him a chance for two deer & as many hogs as we can process in two days. All for no charge.

For all you hunters in Oregon and Washington, I started a thread in the "Community & Regional Connections » Regional Boards » Region Eight" that gives information on the Gray Wolf populations for our State's.  If you've been following what the wolf populations in Montana and Idaho have been doing to the elk and deer herds there, you may want to keep tabs. . . .

I made a similar thread in the fishing subforum. Perhaps a link to this one would be useful in all of the child boards?
