I think the LDS Food Storage Calculator does an excellent job of bringing the idea of what an actual years worth of food storage looks like in numbers. It's all too easy to look at five or six buckets of food and think that you're covered for a long time. It's hard to conceive how much food one person actually consumes over 365 days, and when you start counting by calories, without the calculator, you can get lost in the numbers.

It's a good tool.  Now do they have a tool for finding space of a years supply of food.  :(

seems like the water consumption is a bit low....for my wife and I, the calculation reads that we only need 28 gallons of water a year, seems like we would need more

I believe the water is 14 days, not a year.  it used to have a () notation on that.

You are correct MorningSunshine. There is usually a notation that states something similar to the following,

"* It is impractical for most families to store a year's supply of water. However, at least 14 gallons per person are suggested as a two-week emergency reserve."

The LDS allows this code to be used on personal websites, but unfortunately some folks miss the notes when they're ripping the code.

There should also be a note there regarding the reason bleach appears on the list with water. The bleach in this case is used for water purification purposes.

There is a more detailed Storage Food Calculator at The Food Guys (http://www.thefoodguys.com/foodcalc.html) that has both a fruits and vegetables section.

Thank you all for these links and further explanations. I see, according to the calculator, we are covered in most areas, but way short in some others. My wife and I will be reviewing these recommendations, adjusting here and there to fit our needs and move forward.

Very good stuff!

This will help me build my food storage.  Just started stocking up.  Slow and steady wins the race.

Been working on a calculator that works more with the foods we store and eat. Also added nutrition information so that we can tell what we are getting for our buck. There is a calculator in excel form and an instruction sheet to go with it. See what you think, would like some feedback.

Thanks, TPPrepper -- looks like a useful spreadsheet.  I'll have to play around with it a bit.

[Merging this topic into an earlier Food Storage Calculator topic.]

Thanks for the great response, I hope it helps us all get prepared for what may come. If you guys try it, let me know if any tweaks it could use.
I'm with you on finding something that told the story on what we have on hand. At 55, I watch my diet more now and the nutrition info helped me.
Am working on a post to follow up the list since the total calories are only one part of the puzzle, the rest is having enough of the right quantities to make decent meals.
Will stop by the intro LvsChant, should have done that awhile ago. BIG BIG fan of Jacks!
