Not as far off as I thought I was.  But not as close as I would like.

I mean 450lbs of wheat?  I thought I was alright with 75lbs :-[

Where would you get 450 lbs of wheat? 42 gallons of water for a year? Somehow that seems short. Though this is very helpful. It can be a guide for me when trying to build up stores.

They say you are supposed to have a gallon of water per day per person in your house.  For a year, for my family of 4, that's over 1300 gallons of water.  I have been trying to decide where I would store that much water.

Yeah, that water calculator has to be a bit wonky.

A year's supply for my wife and I was only 28 gallons, uh that doesn't sound right.  I like the rest of it though, even if I'm going to go broke buying to those standards. ;)

if you take time to read the lds literature they recomend storing enough water to last 72 hours, no one can store a years supply of potable water for a family. One of my first forays into home storage was to get a home starter kit from the lds site it comes with a small cookbook and strorage principles.

There are a number of LDS guides out there.  At the end of the day I had to use this and then do a sanity check by multiplying the recommended amount of storage by the calories provided.  It was not too far off but keep in mind this calculator focuses on the types of food offered by the LDS canning centers (which is a wonderful resource for anyone LDS or not).  In the end I took this and then added a number of things to it.  If you sit down and think about it there are a ton of things missing if you ever want to use this (yeast, vinegar, honey, etc.) but a good start to at least get you thinking.

I didn't like the LDS lbs. per person calculator so I built a better" mouse trap".

Ok - since the main objection here seems to be water...

Let me place a shameless plug for The Berkey Guy here - he was a valued vendor, and has now become a friend.

I balked for so long at spending the money on a large Berkey, and have done so now. Thanks TBG!!!

I really like how you did that.  Excellent work.  Might have to steal that idea from you.

You do not store a years worth of water, store for short term but prepare to filter, purify etc for the long term.

Maybe the calculations are in pounds of dehydrated water per person...
