It's a great feeling when you get that coal, put it in a bundle and start hacking when you accidentally inhale smoke.  ;D

I teach people how to get bow drill fires. Here's some pointers:
make the "V" notch a 45 degree angle..but don't go to the center of your burned circle. It's a waist of energy and will create a nipple on the tip of the spindle. You can use the tip of a knife to gadge the angle if the knife's tip is a 45. Folding a dollar bill at one corner will make a 45 also. If you make the angle too narrow the coal might get stuck in the wedge.

But this is the most important thing I tell people that I teach: When trying to make a coal do NOT go fast and use a lot of pressure in the beginning. You want to build up unburnt dust in the wedge and then try to ignite that with a lot of heat and pressure.

If you go fast and hard in the beginning you'll get a lot of smoke but you are also burning the dust as you make it. I tell the scouts to think of making a firecracker punk and then lighting it.

this is the best instruction video for technique/form on bow drill fires. Notice she goes slow at first and then gives about 10-12 quick long strokes with pressure.

Not sure the knitting is good for my marriage. My wife disapproves of the language I use while attempting. At least my four year old will have the ugliest scarf in her class, when she starts school, next fall. Maybe she would prefer a potholder?

Look at this from a permaculture perspective - you can use the bow drill to set fire to your knitting fails and produce heat as a byproduct.  ;)
