Title: Forum Badges
Post by: Sister Wolf on April 14, 2009, 04:02:34 PM
After a bit of discussion, it has been noted that it would be neat to have a thread devoted specifically to people who wanted to share forum badges that they've made.  Yes you can steal them and add them to your sig line.  That's what they're for.

So I'm starting one.  These forum badges are for adding into your sig line.  It'd be nice if y'all would upload them to your own servers so that I'm not overloaded with people trying to hotlink.  So far you guys have been great about that (I've been checking).  if you can't upload the photo to your own server, that's fine.  Hotlinking isn't going to KILL me.  Just don't do it if you can help it.

Also, it'd be great if you only took badges that applied to you.  If you're not part of the supporting member's brigade, why would you want a brigade badge?  And if you're not a founding member, don't pose as one.  It's not against forum rules to be a liar, but just don't do it.

K, ugly stuff is over.  Now for some kick ass badges!

I'll go one better:

I didn't want to assume me merely asking it to be done would get it done despite my awesomeness.  ;)

The ant would actually be an overview outline in black like your original ant side view and the SEMPER PARATUS would be Times New Roman and the "The Survival Podcast Member's Support Brigade" would be the same font that you use on the others. Thanks muchly!

And not to derail the thread and you can start another one under Campfire to respond, but what did ya think about TMIAHM?

I generated mine as a complete JPG image.  (Paint.Net is free and really good)

Then I created a free account at Photo Bucket, uploaded it, and them call the image from there using this code:

[ IMG]http://photobucket.com/albums/yy104/doc/DB5.jpg (http://photobucket.com/albums/yy104/doc/DB5.jpg)[/IMG]

Delete the space between the first bracket and the IMG at the begining --- should be [img] not [_img]  --- had tio do it that way so it would display in this message.

Just put the image url between the two bolded pieces of BBCode.

You can do it under PR!OFILE/FORUM PROFILE INFORMATION/SIGNATURE

"The TSP staff asked respectfully before that the soldier NOT be used as forum badges for members.  I'm going to reiterate that request again.  Please. Do. Not. Use. The. Soldier. Ant. Thank you.

I don't wish to be argumentative - I simply wish to clarify that the following was what was actually said regarding the matter of usage: "Like DEV said, I'm not going to tell you that you cannot use it, but I will say that I'd prefer it if you didn't." That came from, er, you.

Unfortunately at the time of that original note, I failed to fully understand that message in its COMPLETE FORM and, took it out of the full context of the the entire message.  The context in which I took it was specifically regarding the "bumper sticker" conversation and not overall - generally.  Having gone back for the QUOTE, I reread the message IN ITS ENTIRETY and realized where I had gone wrong.

Regardless of the 'leeway' left in the original message, I would not have used the SOLDIER ANT if I had fully comprehended the details of the matter AT the time.

I apologize for both my error and lack of reading comprehension skills in this matter.

Delete the space between the first bracket and the IMG at the begining ...

You can always use the HTML "code" command. HTML inside the code delimiters will not be processed as HTML. Therefore, you can type coding exactly as needed without having to add "disabling characters."

Example.

Code: [Select]
[IMG][url=http://photobucket.com/albums/yy104/doc/DB5.jpg]http://photobucket.com/albums/yy104/doc/DB5.jpg[/url][/IMG]

Just wanted everyone to know, if you use Mozilla firefox as your web browser, rather then having to create a photo bucket account and saving images to it, and all that jazz, all you have  to do is right click on the image you want to copy, click "copy image location", then wherever you want to put the image just type (http://) and in between (http:// and) right click and click "paste".

If you can understand how to do what i just explained it will save you tons of time in the long run.

Unfortunately if you use Internet Explorer you cant do this, but you should be using Mozilla anyway, it protects much better against viruses and what not. I also find it makes pages load faster.

Actually, with Internet Explorer you can:
1) Right click on the image and select PROPERTIES, then highlight and copy the URL out of the Address (URL) box.  Then insert it between the [ img ][ /img ] markers.

For me, the main reason to use photobucket is to store images that I manipulate.  Also, occasionally you will run across an image that one site will not let another site 'link to' or 'call' (if it does allow a save then Save and Up to PB) or it might not even let you right click SAVE it.  If the latter is the case: hitting PRINTSCREEN (PS) and a paste into my favorite free image program (PAINT.NET) allows a quick cut from the copied page, then a Save of the image, and an upload to Photo Bucket.

Here's one I came up with the other night, and Sister Wolf was so kind to touch it up a bit for me.
This is for all of us who own and love those tactical firearms that are so terrifying for the bleeding hearts such as Nancy Pelosi and her ilk.
They are the disdain of the gun grabbers, the nightmares of Sarah Brady.
The Black Rifle is fearsome beast, and I love them all.
So, we proudly introduce to you good folks,
the TSP Black Rifle Club.
All dues are to be paid to me. I like cash.  ;D
Just kidding, it's free. Unless you just want to send me money.

That may take some work. I'm experimenting with some new software tonight.
I'll see what I can do. For a guy who has no clue about this stuff, I'm sure trying.  ;D

We can call it the U.S.S.ARF Club! :) (USSR...get it?? :P)

EDIT:
I just whipped this up. If anbody likes it, run with it! Add text and "badgeify" it. :)

Patriot,

Need one with an M14 on it or does that just fall under black rifle club already? I do really like that badge, it would make a kicka$$ patch.

I think that could be worked out. I'm running a little behind on making the badges. Works been crazy, and I've been doing side projects. But I'm going to try to make one for the AK, the M14/M1A, and if i can find a silhouette of the Hi-Point Carbine, I'm going to do that one for ColdHaven.
Also I want do do one with the AK and AR for folks who "swing both ways".  ;D

You're using photoshop?

Select the circle, then press "control + J"  (no plus, just control and j)

Then double click on "layers" (on your right) and go in and delete the background layer.  You'll be left with your badge, on a checkered (transparent) background.  Then save it as badge.PNG

Then you will have a badge on a transparent layer.  :)

EDIT:
Tried that, it won't let me save it as a PNG, only a PSD. The only way it will save as a PNG is if I flatten the image, then the background shows up again...damn.

How do I resize the badge in my sig code so it's the size of the others?

Also how do I match the background?

If there is no way to do it through code, I can modify the image when I am at home next.

To match background, you've got to do it with photoshop, at least thats what I think the others used. I used standard Paint to resize the image.

Heck, the Israelis use them with shortened barrels and suppressors for riot control. ;D

------------------------------------------------

How do I do this, I'm pretty new to the whole forum thing.
thanks,

thanks,

Go to the "Profile" link/button at the top of the page and select "Forum Profile" from the mouseover menu.

Just add the URL of the image in your forums profile.

There are more specific in structions earlier in this same thread.

Hope that helps!

155 posts in this thread and Greywolf is the first one to do the "stinkin' badges" thing.

*slaps self on forehead*

Usually at the mention of "badges," the "stinkin' badges" thing goes through my head.

I looked through this thread and didn't see where the badges were located.  Is there a repository for them, or are we just making our own?  Is there already a badge for MSB Life Members?  Thanks gang!

if i remember correctly just scroll through and grab whichever ones you want, save them, upload them to your preferred hosting site and then use them.

Some are stored and others are not, but grabbing, storing it in your own hosted space and using it from there, whether that be personal space at your own site or on a picture sharing site like Flickr or PhotoBucket, is probably the best method.

PermaEthos Founding Member banner

I've seen a couple of people with one in their signature line.  Where did you get the banner from?  I think I can figure out how to add it if I can find the image.

I haven't seen a PermaEthos banner yet. PM the person(s) displaying them and ask.

I saw it on Tacoma Sentinel and BlackNovember.  I'll PM one of them as you suggested.

If you right click on the image and select 'view image' it will take your directly to the image URL. you can insert that into your sig box or save the picture and rehost.

I would say to save the picture and host it somewhere yourself, because hotlinking cheeses some folks off.

You also never know when someone will remove something without your knowledge.  Then you have a dead hotlink.......and what Nicodemus said.  Don't cheese folks off.

agreed, saving and rehosting is best, that is what i did. plus that way you can resize them and tweak them if you want.

I've also seen where people get so "cheesed off" from others using images w/out permission (and using up bandwidth the hoster pays for) that they make a new image exclaiming that said person linking the image is stealing ie:

Many probably don't understand, here is a good explanation: http://altlab.com/hotlinking.html

I've seen a few of those instances over on Reddit. Huffington Post was stealing stuff and also ESPN did at some point as well (NFL). So the OP's edited their images in funny or profane ways and that would show up on the thief's site.
