Title: You know those "bastard" fruits & veggies no one wants? The ugly ones?
Post by: Oil Lady on August 06, 2014, 06:48:36 AM
... All the "step-child produce" that is perfectly edible but merely LOOKS yucky and undesirable?

Well ... an anti-food-waste program in France has been launched to try and bring a screeching halt to the travesty of hundreds of tons per year of otherwise fine food hitting the supermarket dumpsters.

And it's working!

Here's an awesome video (in English) which explains this nifty food-rescuing program. In it, the "bastard fruit" becomes the "inglorious fruit."

That's awesome. . . .  I wonder how many of those consumers (prior to this program) knew that they eat those ugly fruits and vegetables when they eat processed foods?

These are the foods we get in at gleaners. And we are not getting this year. We should have been on many field picks thus far, since it is August, and thus far it is not happening.

Has it been a bad year for gardening up there?

Nope. But I think anything extra is making up for California.

Inglorious fruits and vegetables...

It's one of the things I love about farmer's markets. Something happens when people walk into them where they don't care if a tomato looks like it's absorbing a siamese twin or as if it has a tumor. Nobody complains about lopsided unwaxed apples with brown speckles at these places.
