Post by: Black November on October 19, 2015, 11:10:17 AM
Q: What do you do when your canvas machete sheath goes kaput?

A: Learn Saya (鞘) Japanese wooden scabbard making. Let me know what you think.

pretty damn awesome.  I have one of these: http://www.coldsteel.com/Product/97MKM/MAGNUM_KUKRI_MACHETE.aspx.

After sharpening the blade it cut a nasty gash when putting it back into the cordura sheath.  I guess I did a good job on the blade but now I need a new sheath.

Very nicely made. I make wooden scabbards for some of the replicas I make. Of course I only use a chisel to keep it authentic, but I bet the router you used makes a much quicker job. You may also consider one of the old techniques I do - the inside of the scabbard is covered with linen fabric, soaked with oil or tallow. Keeps the blade lubed. This requires a scabbard that can be taken apart to re-grease the lining. This is how the Slavs and sometimes also Vikings kept their blades nice and shiny.
