Title: Covid- 19 Staycation What have odd things have you run out of?
Post by: PorcupineKate on March 21, 2020, 07:04:07 PM
I expected heavy cream and fresh fruit to be the first things we have run out of.

I was wrong.

I wasn't expecting to run out of black pepper corns, and coriander seeds. I am low on other spices but these to are critical.  My spice cabinet in general is rather decimated due to adding a bunch of new recipes to diet this year. I am running very low on my dehydrated herds from the garden so I will upping the number of plants for the herb garden.

Also going through my huge sewing stash I discovered I am all out of thin elastic.  A friend wanted some to make masks and I was shocked to discover I didn't have any to give her.

um... molasses.

my daughter makes us bread, but because we ran out of flour in February, I told her I would buy more when my local store has a case-lot sale: everything is way cheap by the bulk, and it is always in March (and late September).  Well, the case-lot started... and so did the panic buying.  So no white flour for her bread.
Her whole grain recipe is really good, but takes about a cup of molasses.  And we are low.  Maybe two more batches of bread.  I usually buy it by the gallon container cuz the store bottles are barely a batch  ::)

so.. yeah... molasses.

I'm betting you have other things to substitute, so all isn't lost :) (sorghum, honey, etc.)

Well, I found a hole in my preps....Living in an apartment means less storage space. With the general curfew starting tomorrow I had to make a run to my storage space to get the rest of the protective equipment, alcohol etc.
I was also caught with my jerry cans empty...

My bathroom shower has developed a slow leak.  I am locked in the house with time to do a big project, but I need hardware and tile to redo the bathroom.

Other than this my biggest problem is getting bored with food storage stuff.  People were not wrong about this in the survival books.  I'm having lots of weird cravings.  Things like apples, ice cream, bread, buffalo wings, and tacos.  Is it worth the risk of a trip to the grocery store?  About 300 known infected people in my county and I am in a high risk group.  I'll stay home and have more canned chili and some rice.

Fairing well here. Too early in the game to be running out of anything for us.

I expect the first to go will be the cola, corn chips, packaged cheese.
Have other drink mixes stored away, have cookie making's, but nothing to replace cheese. I always shied away from the dried LT cheese in the #10 cans, due to the high prices.

I'm sure there will be something else in the next couple of weeks.

Just back from Kroger while ago. Name brand soda was plentiful, no store brand. Cheese and chips in good supply in that store.

Some time ago I had been searching for another brand of good corn chips after Mission decided to end there's, or to not ship here.  ???
Anyways, I landed on GV's Bite Size corn chips which have a great flavor.
And of course, they were all sold out when I was there, so picked up the lookalike Tostoito? chips. Haven't tried them yet.

If we don't get ours dehydrated (last years garden haul), we'll loose them all due to sprouting like they are now.

the good thing is that salsa is a luxury, not a staple...i CAN live without it.  I have TONS of beans and rice and macaroni and eggs and meat.  I'm gong to go dig up some canning jars and freeze some of the milk and yogurt that's in the fridge.

I am making a shopping list for next week.  I will be getting whatever i need to actually make and can my own salsa.

We make our own salsa, one of the reasons we grow so many tomatoes.
We use 4-5-6 different recipes. Not set on any one of them. Like em all.
We back off of the ones now that burn the hair off yer ass.

I was actually surprised that the 3-lb bags of yellow onions were wiped out at the grocery store the last time I was there... who would have thought people were cooking real food??? They did still have some of the loose yellow onions for sale, so I bought some, along with celery and carrots.

I like to keep fresh ones around for my soups, etc., but can do without and use dried if need be. I do keep dried celery and onion powder in my regular storage, so will only be lacking the carrots... I think I have some dehydrated in LTS, but will have to hunt to find them.

For anyone looking to start making your own salsa, here's a fantastic place to start.  Been making Annie's Salsa (http://thesurvivalpodcast.com/forum/index.php?topic=4741.msg45030#msg45030).

I've run out of coffee creamer.  One of my indulgences is International Delight Coldstone Creamery creamer.  I can do without it, but if we hit a store, that's on the list.  Plenty of coffee.

We really only use milk for cooking and in DH's coffee - so don't use that much... I've already warned DH that we'll be pulling out the powdered milk if we cannot get it anymore :) Plenty of coffee and tea here, too.

We stocked up so much we haven't really run out of anything yet. Strategically bought a bunch of quick microwave frozen meals and things I can whip up in 5 minutes just to make it easier to get through the first week or two of whatever this is. Last night we cooked our first "real meal" and things have settled way down now that we are more or less hunkered down. As the space in the freezer empties out it will get restocked with more practical foods and meats / veggies.

We are also mass-freezing ice blocks and keeping 2 or 3 coolers filled with large blocks of ice just in case the power were to go down. Also have a new 7,000 watt generator bought on craigslist for half what it would have cost in the store. Got 15 gallons of gas for that and a siphon to get the gas out of the 2nd car sitting in the driveway that is the NOT THE APOCALYPSE vehicle.

Our Cliff Bar supply is almost gone and I thought we had at least a month's worth. That's probably the first thing to need a RE-SUPPLY of since the pandemic began.

As things progress (if they do) we will be using cliff bars for hiking and backpacking and eating better things. The last 2 weeks were convenience and comfort food now we are switching to prepared meals.

Bread - I didn't realize how much we'd eat.  7 people frequently eating eggs and sandwiches add up to a lot of slices of bread.  We've been 'forced' to make homemade bread.  Shucks!

I think the real surprise was how fast things went.  With everyone staying home, more people cooking, etc...

I also saw an article saying to go store up 30 days worth of food.  That's fine to say that in a 'time of peace' but to say that in a time of panic is irresponsible.

We put up extra ice cubes from the icemaker into 2gal zip lock freezer bags then transfer those to the deep freeze when the freezer starts emptying out.
1, if the power goes out, we have ice in there to keep the frozen cold.
2, if we have a dinner get together, we have plenty of ice cubes.

My neighbors have free-range chickens who graze in my yard all day and I have a very nice breadmaking machine so I can have fresh bread waiting when I am done working remotely all day.

Dump the ingredients in and walk away. Come back to Panera Bread at home.

change.....since the economy here is about half cashless, it is a good thing to have the exact amount in coins for the every day transactions. So you do not have to take change back.
well in my infinite wisdom -some months ago- i got rid of quite a lot of change, cos they were a hassle to store and manage.

Nothing yet so far.
We keep shelf stable milk on hand for cooking. Most likely enough for 3? or more months. Run out of that, then we have powdered LT in #10 cans.
And, we have 2 first time goats that the wife has started milking.
I thin we're set for milk. May be making some cheese later on.

Games/entertainment.

We have not been real big gamers, but this is showing that we need more entertainment for a bug-in situation, especially an extended one. We have a few games, and I have just ordered a couple more, but after this is over, I'm going to get a few more games. (Plus it will help when we invite friends and relatives over.  :) )

Craft materials, my two girls love to keep themselves busy drawing and coloring and doing crafts.  We are running low on scotch tape and and white construction paper, yarn, and paints.  Thank god we have tons of crayons and other craft supplies to get by.

Can’t avoid small supply runs for perishables like milk, eggs, and fresh fruits.  Luckily we are surrounded by small Amish shops that keep us supplied.  We were already pretty well stocked on non perishables but I grab extras if I’m already on a run.

Amazon get a lot of my business for things I normally would have run to the hardware store for.  I’m avoiding the city like the plague, literally.

if you can get a roll of packing tape, give the tape to them with a pair of scissors and any boxes you can spare.  It is amazing what kids will come up with!  Colorful duct tape is also fun.

Sunshine,
Thanks for the recommendations (+1.) Unfortunately, with being basically unofficially medically retired (not enough strength/endurance to have any real income, taking money out of our retirement fund to live) those prices are out of my reach. Free to $10 is more along the lines of my budget.  :-[

I'm not sure whether your first suggestion was tongue-in-cheek, but it was very intriguing: I don't remember ever seeing any games which were cooperative. Usually it's a competition to try to beat the other players. I told Mrs. ChEng that I wished that we had the $50+ to order that game, just to see how a cooperative game would work. She mentioned that Jumanji was cooperative - the players worked together to try to stay alive.  :o To which I replied that this was only in the movies; in the game, you still try to beat the other players.

Ironically, just a few hours after I ordered Parcheesi for my wife, we were going through some of our old stuff, and she found a Parcheesi game. Oh well, I guess that two Parcheesi is one Parcheesi, and one Parcheesi is none Parcheesi.  ::)

I do not know where you are... but around here there are "game library" stores, where you can borrow (or rent) a game for fairly cheap.

and yes, Pandemic was totally tongue-in-cheek.  LOL. but it is kind of a fun game; we have friends who used to own one of those game-rental stores, so they have ALL the games.  seriously.  All.  The.  Games.

Pandemic is a fun game, one of the kids has one, it is a pricey game.  The co-operative part is fun, as I often forget everything I can do with my character, and one of the kids can prompt me !

Catan is a good game, not co-operative, it is for 2-4 players, but is also pricey, I do not own it, but we played it alot over the Christmas holiday.

Yeah, I checked with the Mrs.; neither she, nor I, had ever heard of those. I think that they don't exist here. So, we'll just have to pick our games up on e-Bay, or a thrift shop like Goodwill or the Red, White and Blue stores.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Pandemic is a fun game. You do need a good group of people though who are willing to work together.

We're big into board games and have quite a few. Another good one (if you have some extra budget) is Telestrations. You will be laughing until your sides hurt.

For anyone else in my financial situation (or anyone who wishes to conserve their money,) I found a video on a paper Battleship game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xqrotm6VrBE.) He does not follow the Hasbro rules (different ships,) but it seems pretty playable. I made one of these paper game boards, and will be checking it out later today. If anyone would like the file (MS Word .doc) give me a couple of days to fine-tune it and I will make it available.

I broke a spring on the garage door. I realize it's just normal wear and tear and it would happen eventually but... NOW?

We got the cars out and I clipped the safety line causing it to slam shut and the Mrs. and I had beers and 4 letter words.

The normal wear & tear stuff is a bit hard right now.

Y'all make me laugh and that's saying something these days.

I'll confess something... I'm not big on cake decorating. I'd never last on the baking TV shows. I have a friend who does decorating and she is an utter sorceress in my mind but unless the decoration is part of the dessert like a croquembouche or Sachertorte I'm pretty plain Jane. I have puzzled friends for years because I have no problem piping pate choux and making pastries and I'll do homemade pretzels and such but the "make it look pretty" gene just passed me by.

Hey, it's all about the taste, anyway.

I've nearly run out of patience with my wife. Constantly worrying about when her hair bender and nail shops will open. She heard on the news yesterday that the TX governor is going to allow them to start opening Monday. She immediately started calling them to see if they were going to open. ::)

I am getting anxy about clothing stores.... my kids grew over the winter, and their clothes are either too hot or too small.  Not a life-changer, but moving into the more urgent.

1 word, clippers

I needed a haircut prior to the lockdown starting.  So 3 weeks into the shutdown and me sweating in the garden, I decided enough is enough.  I had my wife shave it down to a #2 guard on our pet clippers.

Well, if animal control ever shows up in the sticks here, I'm doomed.  ;D ;D

Clippers. I don't trust the wife with those, let alone scissors. Last time, some years back, I didn't have any hair left. Nope, never again.

Well mine does too when it is shorter but I haven't had a haircut in 5 yrs. It is down to my shoulders and I keep it in a ponytail. It isn't getting any longer because it is falling out and breaking off every time I brush it.

And my avatar, that is Christopher Lloyd, a great character actor and some days I feel like the avatar looks.

Some people have run out of temperament:
Quote
The man involved in a fight that led to the death of an elderly man is jailed Tuesday night on a homicide charge.
Online jail records show that Mr. X, 50, is in the County Jail on a charge of 1st Degree Reckless Homicide. He's currently being held without bond.
On May 1 Police officers were called to location for a fight between two men.
Police said the incident began after Mr X felt that 79-year-old Russell had parked too close to his vehicle. A verbal argument turned physical between the two men. Russell was injured in the confrontation.
He was taken to hospital where he later died.
Originally Mr. X was arrested on charges of substantial battery and disorderly conduct and released on a signature bond.
He was jailed Tuesday evening on the homicide charge.
UPDATE: A $100,000 cash bond was set for the man arrested on a homicide charge in the death of an elderly man in a fight last week.

I'm running out of patience for celebrity PSAs. I'm sick and tired of being told all we need do is sit in our Malibu mansions as our servants bring us food and take care of our every need.

I'm normally the pro-wealth guy but if you don't have empathy for the young family struggling right now you have a very sick modality. TV isn't a substitute for food.

We have several "non-essential" businesses that have quietly opened up. It's a small town so the cops look the other way when they drive by. And what does "non-essential" mean? The marketplace determines that, not government. They certainly are essential to those who make their livelihood from them.

Those people doing sign language for the deaf are certainly getting a workout. Sort of talking in Tai-Chi; I didn't know that facial expressions were a part of sign language. I think it would be entertaining to see someone try to mime the press conferences.

Saw one a couple weeks ago. Some guy with a fat type face really giving out the expressions. Was comical indeed.  ;D

Yes. I worked with a guy for years that was deaf mute. Others not in direct contact didn't try much to communicate with him, one guy in daily contact did. That person had learned ASL or American Sign Language. Yes facial expressions are involved. Dummy and I, his name was Robert but he preferred to be known as Dummy, used a combination of writing, gestures and facial expressions.

Body language experts must love people who use their hands, arms, when they speak. Trump not only utilizes his hands but also facial expressions when he speaks. Might be a good reason why his tweets might not communicate the intended sentiment.
Facial expressions in signing must work the same way as in spoken word; to emphasize a point, and a good reason why we have facial icons to say what can't be said in words :).

Weird stuff out of stock -- couldn't get any red wine vinegar on my last trip... I use a lot of it, because I make all my own salad dressing, so this is a needed item.

Still none of these at our local Walmart.
Rubbing alcohol
Anything in disinfectant wipes. Zero
Hydrogen peroxide has now disappeared.
Gardening items is disappearing. Hoses and such. Need another soaker hose or 2, and none in stock.
5' plastic tomato stake is 2.00 each now. I'll go back to making them from scrap wood.

Clorox is 6. and change for a gallon.

Cash!?!?!?  :wtf:

The other day, I bought some cheap inverters and some 12Ga shells at my local Walmart. There was a sign above the debit/credit card reader saying (among a bunch of other stuff) "No cash back." I missed that, and when the machine asked if I wanted cash back, I asked for $40.00. The guy was a bit upset, and told me that the store is talking about giving the cashiers empty cash drawers, and not allowing any cash transactions at all - due to the cash (coins and bills) shortage from the mints being closed.

Several (nearly all) other stores, in our area, have signs asking for exact change, or card purchases only.

Haven't seen any of those cash/coin shortages here (MO) yet.
