Title: Hunting in Texas
Post by: pug-shadow on August 25, 2009, 06:54:41 PM
Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had any hunting leads, advice for the DFW area.

I have an OLD compound bow that I used to go hunting about 14 years ago .
I never was successful in actually getting a deer, although I did spend a lot of time sitting in deer stands back then :)

Anyway, I would like to start over and learn hunting again.

I don't have a rifle currently and I will need to get my Bow restrung if I want to use that.
( I could get a rifle, but then I would need to find a shooting range as well )

Are there any hunting clubs, groups, etc..  in the DFW area where I can develop my hunting skills?
Do DFW area forum members ever go out as a group hunting or fishing?

Any advice or guidance is greatly appreciated

Thanks!

DFW is wall to wall with yankees and liberals, no bag limit.

I am looking for someplace to hunt in the DFW area as well.  Last year I had lease in Jack County, but not given the opportunity to renew.

I saw a mention of a hunter class on the other post.
I am going to investigate that for the DFW area.

I would be willing to help pay expenses for a hunting trip with some of the more experienced hunters in the area if there is any interest in that.

In Texas, you are required to take a Hunters Safety Course "If you were born on or after September 2, 1971".   http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/learning/hunter_education/required.phtml (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/learning/hunter_education/required.phtml).  It is a good thing to do anyway.

I was thinking of this strategy for learning .. what do you think?

I was going to get an airsoft rifle (BB are prohibited by Fort worth)
use it for some practice in my back yard.

Also use it to help my son (10) get some practice

then take the hunter safety course with my son
then possiblely buy a 22 rifle
The ruger 10/22 looks to be the best recommendation by posters on the site

A clerk at academy sports store recommended a shooting range in the area (Alpine shooting range)
(feel free to recommend any around Fort worth, if you know on on the north side that would be cool)

Then use the 22 to get a bunch of practice, maybe take some courses at the range

potentially use it to try small game hunting (maybe squirrel)

The next rifle I was thinking of was a 30-06.

My neighbor is part of a group lease on some land that has wild pigs.
So that might be my next step in hunting

anyway that's my thought process.. what do you think

Alpine is a good range...Here is a list of ranges in the DFW Area.. is it is a few years old but for the ranges I use, it is current http://falarak.com/ranges.aspx (http://falarak.com/ranges.aspx).  Did you check the ordinance on BB guns?  I live in Southlake, and they are permitted, but can not exceed a certain fps rating.

If you need some help taking care of a pig problem, shoot me a PM.  I know of another person that might be interested.
