Title: Lights Out by Halffast - Free PDF Book
Post by: ModernSurvival on October 10, 2008, 03:35:08 PM
A listener to the show named Brian sent this to me.  Read about the first 50 pages so far and it seems pretty good.  So far it is less clichce and "tac talk" then Patriots was.  The scenario is an EMP shutdown of the grid, a definite real threat.

We Interrupt This Program. http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/showthread.php?t=192640 (http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/showthread.php?t=192640)

You have 36 minutes to prepare cause we just found a asteroid headed toward earth, we didn't see it until too late, best of luck....
POTUS

Pretty decent story by A.T. Hagan.

Lights out by Halfast is kinda a primer on the "survival" road.  Easy read, simple to follow.  Just wish I had the garage space he seemed to have. ;)

Jack,
you beat me to posting this.  :D
I enjoyed it. Pretty well written for "fan fiction" I guess you could say.

The only thing I didn't like about it was at the end.  The jump from one important part to another.  I almost wrote about it, but I didn't want to spoil the story for anyone.  Oh, there was another part - a violation of privacy issue, that I didn't like also.

Otherewise great story!   (I have read it a couple times)

I just started rereading it again for like the fourth time.  Lights Out was my introduction to PAW fiction.  It got me thinking a lot more about long term preparedness.

 More PAW Fiction Here (http://teotwawki.net/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=b677676458e79dabad164301fd43a813&#3)
Here's a link to a WHOLE bunch of PAW fiction.  Halfway down the page...under "Fiction".  I've read just about all of Jerry's stuff.  Most are fairly short stories.

I'm about 150 pages into Lights Out, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.  It's a better written book than Patriots: Surviving the coming collapse, but it does tend to drag on a bit.  There are long stretches that seem to focus on a laundry list of mundane chores and errands that the main characters engage in, but it makes you consider what you would do in that same situation.  I'm also able to focus on each character better than Patriots.  In that one, each character got a brief description, and there was no real character development after that.  All the characters pretty much blended together, while others seemed to be forgotten about completely.  I haven't been having that problem with Lights Out, and with some editing, I think it would do well if published.  The characters aren't totally steeped in cliche, and their speech and motivations are pretty realistic.  I'm interested how the story pans out.

I'm having some difficulty with the PDF format, since reading anything on the computer for long periods of time is pretty tiring.  I'd like to sit down with it in hand the old fashioned way, but I'll take what I can get.  I'm not even going to consider printing all 611 pages either!

All that I can add to what has already been said is that the book would be a great read/primer for new preppers.  It really makes you think and realize what we have and what we, God forbid, may need one day.

I am on page 500 (just started on Friday night!) and just can't seem to put it down.  Thanks for the link Jack!

I, too, would like to have a hard copy, but won't print it out either.

My boss was kind enough to let me print it out on our duplexing printer.  It still took a 4" 3-ring binder to hold it all.

I also downloaded it to my Treo so I can read it anywhere I get a few minutes.

At one point there was some discussion out there that "Lights out was going to go to print.  Has anyone heard any more on that?

ARFCOM has a pretty good fiction/manuals thread thats where I first found the story.

Halffast is a member here.
He was trying to get another book published first.
I haven't checked on the progress in some time so I don't know if it is/is almost/was published or not.
I can't remember the other books name, but it is also well written.
Maybe he will chime in.

I just finished it; this was a very good read. I was up to 5 this morning. The older I get, the dumber that is...

Anyway, here is a link to the 'Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack'. Their reports are pretty sober reading.

I'm about 300 pages in to the book.  Great read but a bit wordy at times.  I can only read it on my work computer so it is very slow going but a nice distraction at times  ;D.

Not great literature but very entertaining.  Makes me want to move to Texas.  No one in LA is like anyone in the book.

I have been reading Lights Out for a couple of weeks, and I am now on page 250 or so.  It's been a good read, and I often wonder "what I would do" in that situation.

Not to get anything started...and the following is my opinion

I didn't care for the author's comments regarding Mahindra tractors, and his advice that you would be better off if you had bought a John Deere. Oh pleaze!!! Most of the subcompact and smaller John Deeres are actually imported from other parts of the world. Mahindra is the world's largest 3rd tractor manufacturer. I happen to own an Mahindra E350, and that is a work horse or a tractor. That model is a diesel (the author failed to mention that fact) with a pretty basic electronical system that could probably be started manually (if it had to be started) with only a battery feeding the starter.

Here is a vid of me and my tractor:   ;)

I started reading "lights out" at bedtime a couple nights ago.  I'm at the part where they're about to make a decision on the ranch so don't spoil it all for me. :P

It's not bad so far, though it could use a professional editor.  Just someone to make sure the spelling and grammar conform to Standard American Television English.  (Or maybe I have an outdated version.  Had to get it in plain text to read better on my Palm.)

Also so far the book focuses a little too much on the fine points of every little shopping errand and how much the ammo costs and so on.  Kinda drags the story, and the prices are already out of date.  The words "pre-ban" come up a little too often.  Again, I think a competent but sympathetic editor could help.

But it has a lot of potential.  Already it has me thinking...

I emailed the PDF to my Kindle address and read it on my Kindle. I enjoyed the book very much and it certainly gave me some additional insights and ideas on how such a scenario might play out.

Prior to going to print, the book could definitiely use some more proofreading... many instances of "loose" instead of "lose", "he wretched...", "Baretta" ... and frequent and odd uses of the term "cretin". I think the author might think it means something different, or might be thinking "miscreant".

Still a very enjoyable read.

I just finished today. It's a long one, but well written. Worth the read.

One thing I would like to add, is that EMP from a nuke of the size the Tango probably had wouldn't do that kind of damage. It's all about voltage overloads. Points and condenser cars would probably still run with having to be repaired. (The newer diesels have TONS of electronics and will be vulnerable. Each model would need to be evaluated, because I don't know which ones went to more electronics, when.) The transformers might go, especially the high voltage ones, like the 115KV and higher. On the other hand the electromagnetic surge from a strong solar flare may do the job very nicely though.

Maybe if we all "ganged up" on him, he would consider having it published - even if it were in "paperback", he could earn quite a bit of income off it.  Yes, I would be willing to spend more for a hardcover edition.  (And, of course, any sequel he might consider writing/publishing.)  (Fingers crossed [X])

This book was HOLDING the #500 spot on Amazon yesterday. This is quite incredible for the mainstream reading crowd to be picking up on it so intensely! This is competing against all the classics, text books, foreign language, and the holy bible as well as college books.

It came out in march. I think this might be another Hal Lindsey scenario.

Whomever made the list of "survival fiction" books I want to say Thank You this was an awesome read and really helped with the "cabin fever" that I have had all week-end due to the Ice/Snow here in Oklahoma that seems to have everything "shut down" in town.

Just finished my self.  Excellent read, wish it was in paperback!  It also made me think about time and plans.  Unfortunately, vehicles not running will thwart a whole log of those plans!  It seemed like alot of folks would not make a decision until the danger was on top of them.  You did see them start to become moreproactive as the attacks came.  I also don't think Joe would have made it back to anyone.

Just finished reading this last night...I also could not put it down. Great book...

I kind of stayed away from fiction like this until now, choosing more instructional-oriented reading, but that started getting a little old after a while. Reading "Lights Out" was a breath of fresh air and it really motivated me. It was also cool to read about people's mistakes and be able to learn from them.

Just picked up a copy of "Patriots"...about to start reading that.

Really great read, and by the far the best of the genre that I've gotten to so far (Patriots, One Second After, Deep Winter).  I think books like this one really help you to take the blinders off and think past your preconceived "survivalism" notions, and see just how much you aren't prepped for.

SPOILER AHEAD (highlight to read properly)

I thought that Jim would play a larger part in the story but was glad that he made it through to the end. I also thought that the end seemed a little hurried and that it was a bit too easy that Jon was able to control a group of bad ass bikers.

A highly recommended read

My understanding is that the author has reached a deal with some Hollywood types to prospect a wider distribution so it has been removed from the source location I would have given you.  Maybe somebody out there saved a copy after they downloaded.

Well, the day has come. I have made a deal with a Hollywood producer to shop Lights Out around to some studios. He thinks we have a great shot at getting one of them to take on the project. We are also working on a book deal.

That means that I need to ask you to remove LO from your site. There is no way that I can ever repay you for the support you have given the story. Of course you will get an acknowledgement in the book and I will send you a signed copy.

Thanks again for everything.

Looks like Hallfast may get himself a movie deal.  I sure hope him the best as this is one of my favorite SHTF reads.   I just hope he doesn't let hollyweird screw up the storyline.  So while you may find a PDF copy somewhere most have probably been pulled down at his request.

Wow, I really, truly hope this movie gets made - without being turned into a shadow of itself.  I also hope it doesn't turn into a never ending "when?" saga like World War Z.

A listener to the show named Brian sent this to me.  Read about the first 50 pages so far and it seems pretty good.  So far it is less clichce and "tac talk" then Patriots was.  The scenario is an EMP shutdown of the grid, a definite real threat.

It's obviously still out there (nothing ever really dies on the Internet).

Personally, though, I wish HalfFast would consider putting out a self-published version through Amazon, Lulu, or another house like that. As with all content, if you don't provide a legal outlet for it, there's going to be a less-than-legal one or two.

It is my understanding that there is a possible book forthcoming.  I have sent off an e-mail to the author asking, if he could find the time in his schedule, to stop by here (as he is a member) and give a short update on the movie and/or the possible publishing of his book.

Hey guys.  We are working on a few different options for publishing the book.  It is going to be difficult to get a traditional publisher to take it on as it is about four times as long as what they usually like to see from a first time author.  We haven't given up on going this route, but are trying to be realistic.  If we can't find anyone who will do it for us, then we are going to do it ourselves.  That will mean that the book will cost more, but I hope to keep it reasonable.

The movie deal is being shopped to studios by a producer that wants to do it.  I don't have any recent news on it, but as soon as I do, I'll let you know.

The first 20 chapters have been taken off the Frugal Squirrel website.  I am only a member of that forum and have nothing to do with the operation of it.  It is where I got my start with writing LO, though, so it does hold a special fondness for me.

Thanks for all of the interests in the book.  You guys are the best!

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and let us know what is going on.  Love "Lights out" and even tho I have read it a few times I would buy a copy just to have it...well and probably read it again.

I hope a movie deal works out for you and those in hollyweird don't screw it up like they have the tendency to do.

By the way, do you have a repository of other writings you have penned?

Keep the faith bro.

I, too, would purchase a hardcopy (book).

I had read "Lights Out" several times online, but would LOVE to be able to take a copy with me. (Such as to work - reading between routes)
A real "portable" version would be fantastic!
And I believe it would be a great movie. (So long as "they" didn't "Special Effects" it too much.)

Good luck on each endevor. (I have my fingers crossed.  ;D)

Ya that is my fear also...they seem to change story lines for no apparent reason.  The visual simplicity of the story seems like there would not be room for too much in the way of special effects...but we are talking about movie makers here.

I read Lights Out last year and it was what really gave me my kick in the butt to start doing my research and getting prepared.

I just recently finished William Forstchen's "One Second After" which is basically the same premise of an EMP attack on America.  One Second After focuses from the standpoint of a former military colonel who gets in the middle of command and control for a small mountain town in NC.  So, you get to see the difficult decisions that are made about rationing food, triage of folks based on who provides what skills, the realities of cannibalism, and a ton of other aspects of TEOWAWKI.  This spin is different than Light's Out where it deals with a small organized neighborhood (probably the preferable situation to be in).  Be prepared to shed some tears though, the story is easy to get involved in and it will tug at your heart strings.

I recommend both books highly.

So I'm guessing from skimming this thread that the PDF version is no longer available and that no one knows when a hard copy is coming out, is that correct?

I want to read this.  But, hey, if he's shopping it to Hollywood and took down the PDF and isn't doing a hard copy just yet then that's capitalism and I'm cool with that.

I'm looking forward to a print copy of Light's Out at some point.  I was on FS when the first chapter was posted, and followed it through to the end there.

The print version should fix a few things and add new chapters.  That would be great.

Good luck with the movie deal as well.  Although I think more justice would be done to it as a TV show.

The most important lesson that I got out Lights Out was the importance of working together and cooperating with your neighbors, to draw on the varying strengths that each individual brought to the table. Before reading it, I think we tended to think in isolationist terms about our own emergency preps and plans. Not anymore. We're making a better effort to get to know our closest neighbors. Great book. I look forward to the print version.

Since the publisher is listed on Amazon as Halffast Publishing and Halffast is David Crawford's online username, I'm assuming it's self published and you'd need to get it either from Amazon or directly from David himself.  If enough people are interested, maybe Sis Wolf could order a few copies to sell in the store.  If she ordered 25 or more she'd probably get enough of a discount to make it competitive with the Amazon price, and I'd rather support her and TW.

David does a very good job with this piece of writing. While not the best PA novel I have read so far, it would rank in the top 3 on my list. Purchased my Kindle copy a few weeks ago from Amazon. Well worth the $7.99 price tag.

There are a lot of character's in this novel but not too many that you have to try and remember who is who and where they fit in. The editing was pretty good as there were some typos scattered throughout but I would imagine that since this book was so readily available in the PDF format that David probably got a lot of help from some of his readers in that sense. There are some books that I have read on Amazon's Kindle that are Free and most of the authors are more than happy to get feedback from their readers regarding typos.

I would have to say that all in all the author does a very good job of creating a story that is not too far fetched from realization after a disaster such as an EMP burst.

Before even finishing this book I found myself looking forward to his next book. Also would like to say Thanks to David and all those here that got this book the recognition that it so rightly deserves.

Don't be fooled by the number of pages.  I found it to be quick read, partly because I couldn't put it down, but also due to the way it is written.

As to your library, the list could be extensive.  I like good fiction, but for prepping, there are so many good reference books out there on a variety of subjects.  There is a good "Book List" tab on TSP web page and it is a great place to start.

I can't stand reading books online or on a computer screen I prefer to feel the book and the essence that they are...glad to find it in book form and I plan on passing it on to my friends who just don't understand "what I'm doing storing all that food"

I sat down around 8:30 last night after putting the kids to bed and started reading, next time I looked at the clock it was 2am! Talk about being pulled into a story! I may have to put the kids to bed right after supper tonight so I can have more time to read.  ;D

I'm on Chapter 10 and I have to say, so far, it seems much more realistic than other books I have read in the same category.  Although, I really enjoyed Patriots and Survivors.  I didn't have the same issues with characters popping in and out as some others did.

I can't wait to see what following chapters have in store.   ;D
