Title: Question for the Chard/Carey owners

I recently purchased a Chard / Carey pressure canner/cooker. Is it supposed to constantly vent steam the entire time it's running? Everything I read on line about most other pressure canners say that the weighted type pressure relief valves should sputter intermittently once up to pressure. I also remember this type of behavior from mom and grandmas pressure canners from when I was a kid. This Chard unit vents steam at a steady constant rate the entire time it's running. Just wondering if this is normal or not. I tried calling Chard this week to ask them but never got through to someone to ask them.

Sorry... I don't have that brand. My Presto has a weighted valve that shakes and lets off steam that way... best of luck to you!

I have a question about the Chard too --- I have one and I canned salsa in it.   It worked great.

Does this also work like an Insta Pot?   I would not need to buy an Insta Pot if I have this?  Yes or no?

So many gadgets!

I would also like to know if this unit can operate like a Insta Pot.  Are there recipes that people can share for the Chard canner/cooker that are not in the manual?

Yes, you can use the Chard as an instant pot.  If you look at the directions that come with it, there are instructions and recipes for pressure cooking.

Who has been using their Chard/Carey for canning since I last posted?  How do you feel it’s working?  I love the convenience, however I find I have a lot more of a siphoning issue.  I’d say 2 out of 3 times there is either extensive siphoning (like the beets I did which all list half their liquid) or at least one jar not sealing.

Makes me feel incompetent...and I’m a master food preserver w the cooperative extension!

I have a Mirro 22qt. pressure canner. Sometimes it vents constantly, sometimes the weight jiggles and vents intermittently. I'm not sure but there seems to be a relationship between the type of venting, the fullness of the pot and the flame setting. Even when venting constantly (constant hissing) the weight does occasionally jiggle toward the end of the pressure time. I figure that as long as it is hissing it is functioning correctly and maintaining proper pressure. Constant venting may indicate that the pressure is building fast enough to cause the constant rather than intermittent venting. I don't know, just an hypothesis.

Thanks for your feedback, but since the Chard/Carey is an electric pressure cooker/canner the user can’t adjust the heat etc—so it’s got its own specific problems that may be a bit different than a traditional pressure canner that you put on the stove.  That’s why I’m hoping for some input from others who are using the Chard/Carey.
