The Dervaes Institute and URBAN HOMESTEADING® [merged topics]
« on: November 26, 2008, 10:01:57 AM »
really good stuff. Been a follower of the Dervaes for over a year now and the family is a true inspiration. Here in zone 7 Colorado gardening outdoors, indoors, in the greenhouse etc is a challenge. But it is doable. Our little homestead combines alot of survivaL METHODOLOFGIES, including dumpster diving, and freeganism.. Something that is mentioned very little. Along with bartering etc.

Any other opines.

This was the first podcast I listened to and what drew me to this site.  I am so impressed with what they did on such a small piece of property!  I really encouraged me to do more and keep my options OPEN.  I love their video as well!

I have had their sites in my RSS reader for a while now too.

Love their stuff. It's impressive what they are doing.

Too bad they are having a slow year, they won't hit their 10k lbs they wanted to harvest this year.

Good article, thanks for the post.  Although I don't live in sunny CA, they guy really shows what can be done.  Even if I could do 10% of that, we would have 600 pounds of our own food a year.

I just got my copy in the mail last night. Yep, I still read print. There are quite a few good articles in this issue, as usual. This is a good example of what you can do if you put your mind to it.

Homegrown Revolution - The Dervaes' 100ft. Food Challenge (Path to Freedom)
« Reply #13 on: March 05, 2009, 10:07:36 AM »
I was discussing the Dervaes on the 'Survivalism in New England' thread and I thought this would probably be better served by its own thread.

From Jules Dervaes: “This is our form of protest,” Dervaes, 60, says. “And this is our form of survival.”

Just take a peek at an example of someone who truly walks the talk. Homegrown Revolution indeed!
For people interested in the 100ft. Challenge go here.
You can read their informative journal or their Path to Freedom project.
You can also join the beta gardening community Freedom Gardens: Our earth, we dig it.

California Family Garden on a 10th of an acre
« Reply #15 on: August 25, 2009, 01:51:16 PM »
Hey - Jack always talks about this family in California that grows tons of food on their 10th of an acre garden. I've looked and can't find any information on them - I must be spelling their name wrong. Can anyone tell me where I can find more information on them.

Thanks

The site got upgraded recently but it's not entirely finished.  Still, it's better than before even with the occasional issue.  The photogallery can now be found at: http://photos.pathtofreedom.com

The blog will be next with better indexing, searching, etc.

Hope to have it done one day soon!

JordanneDervaes, Your home, your family, and your lifestyle is an inspiration.  Thank you very much.  I showed my wife your video and she was amazed, just as we all are, at how much food you can produce.

Jordanne Dervaes, I too want to add a hello and thank you for being an inspiration.  My hubby showed me a magazine article some time back and it has helped inspire us to continue planting even more in our garden. You should be proud to have accomplished so much.  When do you have time to watch the soap operas?  Just kidding!  ;D We know that gardeners don't have time for silliness - you are either planting, weeding, picking or processing by you are blessed by the end result.  Blessings to you.

Welcome!

You have inspired us to make changes in our home/yard and priorities.   Several trash trees are coming down in a few days, then the transformation of my yard gets serious. :)
