Audio Version of Lights Out! - A Crawford/Spirko Project
« on: January 29, 2009, 08:15:18 PM »
OK guys and gals, David Crawford (Halffast) and I have been chatting about a project and we finally decided to get on with it.  I am doing an audio version of "Lights Out".  Given it is over 600 pages and will take many hours of editing, dictation, etc we will be charging a fee for the final version.

We also want to know if people will want one huge instant download zip file or to receive it on a professionally produced CD.

I have recorded the Prologue and Chapter One and Chapter Two and they are available for a free preview.  Odds are I will eventually make Chapters 3 and 4 part of the preview by next week.  The preview is a raw recording, no music, no editing, etc.  Just to give you guys a taste.

To get the free preview just go to this page, http://www.thesurvivalpodcast.com/lights-out-the-audio-book

This is really cool and I thank David for his willingness to work with me on this project.  I really think Lights Out is a great look at what can really go wrong and how society might react to it.

That's awesome. I vote for the CD, but would be happy with either one.

I think making it available in both formats would be good. The diversity would allow for both who want the nice snazzy CD with art, extras, ect. or just the straight download.

I think this is a fantastic idea!

Fan-freakin'-tastic!!!!  MP3 version would be good.  I could always burn it down to a CD to listen to on long drives.

Great!  How about a serialized release as an audiobook on I-Tunes?

Sweet!!! Thanks Jack and David!
I'd like to see either as long as it is broken into chapters. Easier to go back and find your place...

The thing on CDs is they will have to cost more, we have to have replication, fulfillment, shipping etc.  If enough want them we will do it, I have to order at least 200 to make it worth doing.   There will be a download version no matter what so only select CD on the form for the preview if you would buy it even if an MP3 was also available for less.

Big GO gentlemen!  Download works best for me personally as I'm gone from home 50% of the year.

I certainly don't mind paying or donating for the product though.  Thanks guys!

I'll buy one. Download is fine as long as I can make a backup.

Great Idea! I'd pay for either. I think it's about time Halffast made something off it (that I know of).  :)

I would download it and burn it as needed, but there might be some less technically inclined folks that would be interested in a hard copy.

Very cool idea! Now I will just need to slip it in to my wife's ipod. hmmmmmm......

I'd like professionally produced CDs.
They would make nice gifts.
Also many people I know would listen to a "professionally" produced CD that might look down on a "burned CD" or MP3 file.

Just found this : http://www.co.travis.tx.us/agext/garden/veggies/planting/janmar.asp

Not sure that it works for container gardens are they are more vulnerable to freezing.

Jack mentioned the possibility of getting Lights Out on audio. I am really looking forward to this. This is one of the best survival stories I have read for a long time.
One comment I would like to make. Please make this available to those of us that do not use credit cards. If this could be arranged through money order or some other method it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't use credit cards either.
But I do have a debit card.

I'd be interested in either format, but would prefer a CD as my burners aren't the best. Either way, I'll get it!

Jack,
What do you think of having a cast speak individual parts for the book? I believe that it would bring out great deal of character in the story.
I know it could work really well or terribly, but I think it would be better in the long run. Its just a basic Idea, I can flesh it out moreif you would like.

I think if we want to keep production costs down and if we want to make it available in 2009 while that sounds wonderful it isn't practical.  Again this is 26-28  hours of final audio.  Not that I don't get what you are saying but if we want to sell this thing for 15-30 bucks so anyone who wants it can afford it, that just isn't practical.

I had thought the same thing.  Each "cast member" could speak their parts and then have a narrator for the details.  However, it would require some re-work to turn the story into a "script" to present it in the fashion of a radio show rather than just reading text.  It flows alot worse than you would imagine.

as far as I am concerned download would be great. I hate CDs. One scratch and they are dust. Have to rip them for posterity sakes anyhow. Save the resources.

I downloaded the first two chapters. I was drawn right in!

I have bought and read a couple survival and preparedness guides. I like the novel approach and will anxiously await the final product.

It starts with a very believable scenario.

Great work!

Downloadable MP3 is my vote.

I'm guessing it would take about 20 plus CD if it is not MP3 format.  Some folks with older CD players are not going to be able to use an MP3 format in a vehicle or even on a home CD player.
