For some reason or other, I can't get the link for the download. Is there another way to get the download ?
TIA.

Great Idea! I'd pay for either. I think it's about time Halffast made something off it (that I know of).  :)

Ditto! I have read this many times over the years and it is a timeless story! I would be happy to buy a version and help support Halffasts great work :) He deserves it!!!

Jack,
What do you think of having a cast speak individual parts for the book? I believe that it would bring out great deal of character in the story.
I know it could work really well or terribly, but I think it would be better in the long run. Its just a basic Idea, I can flesh it out moreif you would like.

I think if we want to keep production costs down and if we want to make it available in 2009 while that sounds wonderful it isn't practical.  Again this is 26-28  hours of final audio.  Not that I don't get what you are saying but if we want to sell this thing for 15-30 bucks so anyone who wants it can afford it, that just isn't practical.
Ah well This was addressed in the next post, however I meant that not using Professional actors, but rather how about US readers, supporters and Fans of this author.

I can definitely understand the amount of work that would increase with multiple speakers, but I just had a fleeting thought about bringing a cast of fans into the fold.

Lol and no, no offense is taken Jack, haha.

Stay safe
Stay sane

I listened to the first two chapters and they were well done.  I have read the book and I think it will do well as an audio book.

I read about 90% of the pdf book on my Smartphone.  I have Mobipocket Reader on my phone and they have a conversion program that will turn a pdf book into a format it can process.

I'm STILL hoping and praying that Halffast will publish in paperback.  PLEASE!!!???  I would love to have a copy that I can pick up and take with me anytime.
I'm sure there would be THOUSANDS of copies sold, if he would publish.

I KNOW that I would buy a copy.

Maybe, if enough of us ask for it, he WILL publish. We need to set up some sort of "petition" on this site to let him know he has a "purchase" base.

Thanks Jack and David!

I would be interested in either format.  I've actually listened to parts of 'Lights Out' using a text-to-speech program to convert to mp3 for listening on my commute.

May I suggest offering both a CD and a downloadable zip file?  Lulu.com can do all the 'heavy lifting' by providing the replication, fullfillment, shipping, etc while you guys sit back and collect royalties.  They  provide a web store where your customers can purchase downloads as well as place orders for books, CDs, etc.  Additionally, you and David do not have to provide a minimum order since they use print-on-demand services.

I'd mentioned this idea to David before on another forum but at that time David was pursuing other options.

Any chance you can talk him into getting on board with Lulu so we can have a finished product in our inpatient little hands ASAP?  ;)  I'd love to see "Lights Out" available for purchase in hardcover/softcover, CD,*and* downloadable mp3 and pdf.

Thanks,
Ricky

PS You may want to look at some of the audio books available at Podiobooks.com.  Since most of the audio book authors and readers are non-professional, they have a FAQ and tips page for new author/readers.

Jack's preview of the work was so engaging, I had to download and read the novel the very next minute.  This is an excellent book and for any of you have haven't had the opportunity to read it, I would highly recommend it.

One reason I like it so much, is the fact that it puts a human element on the survivor movement.  When I talk to others about preparing, they think I am crazy.  I stopped talking to people about it.  But when i gave them this novel to read . . . they really started to think about how much we depend on other people to survive, even a few days.  I had talked to my family about storing some food for years, and after reading this novel, they all are starting to prepare.

I look forward to purchasing this audio download / or CD (download preferred).  And I would love to sign a petition for hallfast for a bound, printed novel. This is a book that everyone should read.  Not just for the information it contains, but it is truly a great read.

Thank you for doing this, Jack.

His is the first on this type that I had read.  It helped me get into the prep scene - especially aplicable today, the way things are going.  Amazing parallel in many ways.
I was hooked from the start!

I think the download would be the way to go. Alot of people now days would end up listening to it on an mp3 player anyway and not on a disk player. It is also alot easier for international people (still the small minority) to access instead of having to pay large shipping costs. Also most people ( I hope) would by now have a cd burner if they prefer that format.

A lot of people - like myself - aren't into all the tech gadgets.  Actually, I only got into computers a couple years ago.  And although DVD's are much more compact, I still prefer my VCR recorder (easier to operate and can set to record repeated days/dates without having to do so separately.  Just hit "repeat" 'whatever)

I'm not into the mp3 type devices, so, for that reason, I would want a DVD choice.
But, I would REALLY love a paperback/hardback version!

Once you get into mp3 players you dont tend to go back ;) Constant quality sound, no jumping or skipping, Use it as a storage for your data as well. Very small and light, and best of all rediculously cheap now, especially of ebay, but on that note I still back up all my stuff to DVD as well. Cheers!!

Cool story, I read it a couple of years ago.

Couple of critisisms I have of the audio version for Jack to watch out for while recording the rest is that he sometimes sounds like he is tired, and loses inflection in his voice. Kind of like when kids have to read aloud in school - their voices start loud at the beginning of a sentence and trail off as they work their way through it. Also, there were points where the words were said too quickly, and sounded jumbled together. Minor problems, sure, but if the goal is to get the recording professional enough sounding for it to be marketable - things which should probably be watched for.

I listen to The Survival Podcast all the time on my small cheap MP3 player, One draw back of that, and most probably many other MP3 players, and this would also include audio cd's is this.

You cannot move within a given track, you can skip tracks, restart tracks, but not move to an area within a track.

This was high lighted to me the other day when listening to the Survival Podcast at work and people wanted to come and talk to me and I had to pause my player. Normally it will restart from the last spot but sometimes especially if it goes into power save, it resets to the beginning of the track again. That other day was shocking, 4 times it powered down and each time it reset to the beginning of the track. This is okay except when you are 25 to 30 minutes into the podcast. Listening to it the second time was enjoyable as you pick up things you missed, but by the fourth time you seriously want new stuff.

So as a result of this a suggestion I would like to make is to try and limit the length of a chapter in the book to about 10 minutes and each chapter is a seperate track. This will make the listening more pleasureable, especially on audio cd's

All the best

First choice is downloadable MP3 that I can (hopefully) easily put onto my iPod.

Second choice is a CD.

I love the book, I've read it several times.  I also really like jacks voice on the podcast.  However, I have to say the book sounded too much like reading.  When I listen to a good audio book it doesn't sound like someone is reading.

Anyway that is my only concern.

I'm an audiobook addict.  It's the only way I stay sane on my commute and stay well read without getting double vision with all the reading I have to do at work, too.

If you're interested, I have dozens of on-topic books on CD and some on cassette that I could loan, exchange or sell based on what particular audiobook you're interested in.  Here's just a few titles I have lying near the computer right now:

The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell
The Ice Master: the doomed 1913 voyage of the karluk by Jennifer Niven
Over the Edge of the World (Magellen's expedition) by laurence Bergreen
Sway: the irresistable pull of irrational behavior by Ori and Rom Brafman
River of Doubt:Theodore Roosevelt's darkest journey by Candice Millard
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven (cassettes)
