The Wmart mgr here said pretty much the same thing, except he had to "regretfully confess" that corporate wasn't even purchasing any more ammo from right now (what they have in their distribution centers is what they have, and that's it)...that corporate is waiting to see what the Obama administration decides before they commit to buying any more because if there does end up being an out and out ban, corporate doesn't want to get stuck sitting on all that ammo with no "legal" way to get rid of it.  :(

Surely, face to face purchasing of ammunition has to be pretty low on the totem poll of things to restrict by legislation, especially in the small quantities that they are offering per customer. Do they fear that nobody will want to buy calibres like .223 because of government mandated tracking of sales (to see who might own certain classes of rifles)? There are lots of guns not even being considered for a ban in pretty much all of the calibres that they sell. I wonder if the Administration is pulling out various intimidation tactics to frighten them into such a stance. While that may do good for the smaller dealers out there, it's a bad thing overall.

It sounds as if another calling blitz to Walmart might be in order, though we need more information. I could fathom an Administration like this one trying to restrict the stockpiling of ammo much as had been the case is Soviet Russia and other more authoritarian regimes.

Just sent your comment back to Walmart HQ in Bentonville (unattributed).  Someone is confused somewhere as their official statement from Jan 18 does NOT match up with what your manager is telling you.  So I'm wondering who is bs'ing here.

I just traded a box of .223 of PMC (I got last year for $5.99) for several hundred speer 140gr JHP (for reloading, not ammo).  My rationale is, back in "normal times" the street value is at least 5x in my favor.  Eventually .223 will come back.

BTW: I'm down to less than 1000 pistol primers on hand, and getting anxious about it.  anyone else stressing this?

yeh...hard to feel sorry for you...  I'm new to reloading and was only able to find 100 initially.... down to 50. :)

Talking to the guys at work, they're not able to find .22 LR anywhere in Las Vegas.

I'm "forced" to use expensive bench rest primers for plinking.  That's an extra $0.015 per bang  :o

LOL..... I'd be willing to make that sacrifice.  Just got some more bullets delivered today so that I can start try jacketed rather than cast 9mm rounds.

One of my "hobbies" is amateur economics. One topic I am interested in is the psychology of shortages and how people react, both from the supply side and demand side. The whole ammo shortage is like a big experiment that I hope some professional economist is gathering data. For instance, I have been watching bulkammo.com for availability and price of .223.  Pre-crisis, it was looking like $400 per 1000 (I think?). I could get the same price locally so I only bought a few boxes at a time. After crisis, there was none available at any price. Then they had some 20 round boxes, 500 round boxes, etc for about $0.90 a round. 1000 round lots was $890. They were still running out. They have slowly ramped up the price...$905, $910. Today it is $919 for 1000 rounds and every day when I check, they have something available, albeit at higher prices. I am predicting there will be a peak price, then a slow drop then a crash to <$500 per 1000.

We will see what happens, but I would hate to see $1 per trigger pull for .223. That would be a shame because I really want to go to the gun range once a month and go through 200-300 rounds until I feel comfortable shooting my AR. It would also be nice to take a class and go through 1000 rounds without being out $1000.

Oh well, time will tell.

Pellets are considerably cheaper but even that is ramping up. I bought 500 .177's for $4.99 last year, now it has doubled.

Powder, primers, and bullets are long gone still.  No .22LR for some weeks either.  They do still have .17HMR in quantity.  I have plenty of .22LR ammo, but if I was just getting into rimfires right now I would seriously consider getting a .17HMR such as the Ruger 10/17, etc because that ammo is ALWAYS in stock.  Then later I would get a .22LR when supplies increase.

Remember when new preppers used to be told to stick to the common calibers, like 22lr, 12 ga, 223, 308, 30-30, 9mm and 45 acp, because you will always be able to find this ammo.........

I'm pretty sure .270 is the new .308.  For whatever reason I've seen it in stock most everyplace, as well as brass and reloading die sets.

I stopped into WW the other day as it was next to the Depot. I was surprised to see .380 FMJ 100Rnd White Boxes...I bought only 2 and left 2 more on the shelf, they also had all the 30.06, 270 and 20GA you could need...

The other advice was to stock up before all hell broke loose. You can still find lots of those calibers. Just not in stores. In the long haul, if you only had one, two or a few guns, having them in common calibers would get you further than some random off caliber. For example, if you had something I wanted, and lived in my area, and wanted ammo in exchange, I could give you 25, 32, 9, 40, 45, 12, 22, or 308 for it. Just last month I swapped .308 FMJ for .308 steel core because somebody had it and couldn't use it (fire season restrictions). If you have one of those common calibers and needed to barter to get by, you'd be in luck. If you had something re-barreled in 270 or 16 ga, you'd be SOL. But yes, having some odd caliber guns isn't the worst idea out there either for the exact reason that they dry up last on the retail side of things.

I have been buying those up myself (the boxes are blue LOL)… I was buying them 5 boxes at a time until they put the 3 box a day ration on them (and then I would just come back later and have someone else open the cabinet). Now the one next to where I work is completely cleaned out and the only cal bier left I can use are the 45 Colts of which they have several boxes left, but expensive.

Some of us right now are the gun version of the dingbats who waited until AFTER the hurricane to wait in a 10 mile long line for an overpriced 5 gallons of gas for the generator (or to get home from waiting in a 10 mile long gas line).

Or at the very least, the people who run out to buy a snow shovel the day the news people say a blizzard is coming to town and expecting to find one and/or not get ripped off.

Has anyone taken the time to do some quick math?  With the prices people are paying right now, I could have it sold in a day and pay off my wife's new car, with money left over. . . .  And the folks on the money board say to invest in silver. . . .  When I can make a 300% profit on ammo?

I went around looking for .270 Win today, and the first place I stopped in had some Winchester Super X, 150 grain behind the counter. When I asked how much, the guy looked and then responded "too cheap, 25 bucks." I bought a box, and he said "the next one will cost you 32." Literally, I watched him rip off the price tags on about 10 boxes of the stuff and reprice it at 32 dollars.

No one has any .22lr, except, believe it or not, WM. I think I got lucky, and since I was limited to 3 boxes, I picked up 2 50 round boxes of Remington Thunderbolt for 2.19 each and 1 20 rd box of Corelokts .270 130 grain for $21.27.

Stopped buy a local gun shop to see if they carried reloading supplies.  They don't but they did have a few boxes of Winchester .45acp FMJ ammo for 47.99 for a box of 50!  Ouch.. I guess I will be shooting a lot more .22lr.

Well... I'm not stressing anymore... LOL.... local shop just got primers in and had a limit of 1000 per type, so I got my limit on each type they had.  That will hold me a bit and keep my reloading and shooting practice going.

Oh....wait. The tide may have turned. 1000 rounds 0f .223 for $910 with 36,000 rounds for sale. It is not the same ammo so that may be the difference.

Stopped at the local shop.  They are fully stocked with a 5 box limit.  525 bulk blazer was $40.00.  I said no thanks.  Normally they sell it do $23.00 per box.

They were out of Bear Mace.

Today, the local Walmart had 3 boxes of .17 HMR, 4 boxes of .270 Remington and about a half dozen boxes of bird shot. That is all. Nothing else.

The man at the counter says they get a little in every now and then, but it sells as soon as it hits the shelf.

I have found to get past the 3 box limit, go during the day when nobody is working in Sporting goods — and then just go to some other stores, or run errands and then come back and buy three more boxes.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that most gun shop owners voted for Obama because he has been the best thing for the ammunition and gun business since Adolph Hitler.

That is INSANE!!!

It seems that it costs as much now to shoot a .45 as it USED to cost to take your Desert Eagle .50 to the range!!!!! And back then my friends were NOT buying the Desert Eagle as it cost too much to shoot!

I have been buying at least one box for each gun I own, each week when I get paid. Wally World had some more 3" 12G 00 Buck and it was pretty cheap so I picked up some of that today. They did have some 100 round boxes of 20 gauge shot shells but no 12 gauge game rounds in the large quantities (and way too much for the small boxes they had).

I am trying to have at least 1,000 rounds for each gun before I go to the range again. AND I am kicking myself for not having stocked up when it was cheap. BUT — in the reality of things I have had way more things to focus on in my life over the last couple years than guns.

Just went to my local axcess of evil store Walmart! I found the had 5 boxes of 22 shorts and 7 boxes of 22 long rifle and a bunch of 12ga target loads but only four boxes of 20 round hollow point 9mm and a couple boxes of game load rifle rounds non military cals! The rifle and handgun ammo are limited to three boxes!
Our local gun shops are extremely low and evil black guns are at top dollar in my neighborhood today!  Have a great Day!!!!
