No reasoning was given. I would guess that there will be a lot of small waves as the market fixes itself. As ammo becomes available, people who had given up looking will start restocking and run supplies down, etc. The big waves seem to be done for now, but it's only a matter of time until another news story hits us again.

I wanted to cry today.  Finally, after months of "just missing it", I found 22LR on the shelf at our base exchange.  Ten bulk pack boxes of it....and I couldn't buy it.  It was Remington Thunderbolt - the one brand my guns hate.  ARGGHH!!  Why couldn't it be Federal or CCI???  :'(

I discovered that our local Fred Meyer is once again not only stocking ammo, but they even sell handguns and rifles as well!!  They got rid of the ammo shelf years ago so it was neat to see it come back much better than before.

OK, I caved and bought ammo from Gunbroker today!!  I have beau coup ammo but not one cartridge for .22WMR.  Planning to pick up a LCR in .22WMR for one of my daughters and could not find .22WMR anywhere locally or online except at gunbroker.  At least I was only humiliated in the privacy of my own home.

Why is it that Fred Meyer stores in Puget Sound don't carry ammo/guns, but in OR, or even eastern WA they do?
Same deal with Bi-Mart.  I can go 3 hours in 2 different directions and find them, but not anywhere near Seattle.

Do you really have to ask?  ;) . . .  Some how firearms just don't go well with the metro look.

No kidding.

A few months back I had to kill time in suburban Bellevue before a scout volunteer event in the area.  I was surprised to find a Walmart in the neighborhood, so I poked my head inside looking for ammo.  I could barely find camping gear, let alone any firearms.  I eventually found a store employee and asked where the firearms and ammo are, she responded "you're in Bellevue *pfft*", then rolled her eyes and stammered away.

Because Seattle is more commie than Portland!  If we had a beautiful huge Sound to play in we would have a bunch more people here too.  Not one decent place to go swimming in Washington County.

Wal mart had a ton of 40 and 45 and rifle ammo. No 22, 38, or 9.

I finally found some CCI Mini-mag .22LR today, so I bought 1000 rds. The price wasn't too bad, $12.49 per 100. The guy behind me bought the last 800 rds. they had.

The clerk commented, "Well, that shipment lasted 14 hours. 12 of them, we were closed."

One thing I've noticed recently, that I take as a hopeful sign, is that some retailers are increasing or lifting their limits on how many boxes you can buy.  A couple of months ago, you wouldn't have been able to buy a thousand rounds, because most likely the store would have limited you to two or three boxes.  I assume that means the ammo is starting to flow well enough that the stores aren't afraid that each shipment will be the last one they see for six months anymore.

Other places are starting to take backorders on some of the ammo that they had previously not allowed, which is also a good sign.

Yeah, it seems a lot of the limits have eased up. The last time I was in Academy, they were only restricting 9 mm and .22 LR. Of course, they didn't have any .22, so it was moot.

Happened to be by my local wallyworld today and checked the ammo shelf, and was amazed it was FULL, only thing missing was the 22LR...The lady said it was their biggest shipment of ammo in years. I even took a picture of it just to piss of my brother who lives an hour away and says there is no ammo by him.

Most local shops and retailers such as Bi-Mart, Fred Meyer, and Coastal farm still have limited ammo on the shelf.  More than last year but still sparse.  But I did find that Keith's Sporting Goods in Gresham has a whole wall of ammo at reasonable prices.  I had just bought 500 rds of .22WMR CCI online for $230.  Found the exact same ammo at Keith's for $14/50 and they had several boxes of it.  I picked up three more just because.  Prices are still on on the high side from $18-$30/50 for basic centerfire pistol ammo, whereas it was $12-$15/50 before the last surge and shortage.

Well, there were no limits on anything at Academy last night, but still no .22 LR and they had no .45-70.  :'(

I picked up another 100 rounds of 9 mm FMJ and a 120 round box of .45 acp for practice.

yup, i've heard it comes around sometimes, but i never see it. what's killing me right now is the prices are still too high. i bought 1k of 9mm for $200 to my door. seeing 250 rounds for $100 makes me want to puke. i may have to just suck it up and accept that prices are going to be high for a while... :(

Oh, to see 20c a round for 9mm again.  Also, before the craze I was buying .223 for 30c a round.  Now, I can barely reload it for 31c a round, and that's only by picking up brass off the range.

I'm just now getting around to .223, and between the relative complexity of cartridge and the cost, I'm thinking it's a almost a waste of my time aside from premium match grade loads.

Local retail, the best .223 prices I can find are $8.99 for a 20rnd box of PMC.

Here's my recent reloading component (.223) list:

SR primers: $3.65/100 (~$0.04ea)
lbs powder: $26.50 (~$0.09ea)
55gr bullets: $11.99/100 (~$0.12ea)

That's $0.25 for plinking grade using bullets found on sale.
When I step up to SMK 68gr, easily double the bullet cost.

While it's not practical without a lot of work, if I could successfully cast lead 55gr .223, that's 1 cent worth of lead per bullet based on what I pay for ingots.

For the same reason most of the big box stores that could sell firearms and/or ammo in and around Chicago do not. The only way they are allowed by the .gov to have their permits, etc., is if they agree not to stock the firearms/ammo.

Powder Valley has Tula SR primers for $23.50/1,000, and Hornady 55 gr FMJ or SP bullets for $50/500, and H335 for $18.65/lb (get 10 lbs and with the $25 Hazmat fee that is about $21/lb).  That would reduce your current costs by $.05/rd. for a cost of $.20/rd total.  It will be a very long time before you find even 55 gr FMJ ammo selling for $200/1,000.  Right now it is closer to $400+/1,000 rds.

True about buying in volume would wash out the hazmat fees.  I'm a bit new to reloading the cartridge, so I'm not absolutely certain what components are my favorite.  Once that's all squared away then I can seriously invest in ordering my preferred components in bulk.  I've never tried Tula primers, and am confident, but is that enough to order several thousand?

No joy on 22LR in central West Virginia, but 9mm is becoming more plentiful.

I feel a little crazy for doing it, but Black Friday is coming early for me.  There's a new Big R (farm supply store) opening up here and I'll be camped outside for the grand opening.  I went inside during their soft opening and there were dozens, if not hundreds of boxes of 22lr.  They're not selling any yet - it's all for the grand opening this weekend.  Good stuff too - CCI Quiet 22 and HP. Some other brands as well.  They've got a full load of powder and primers as well.  Two boxes, per caliber, per customer.

While at the local axis of evil store Wmart  they had one box of 40 caliber and zero 22 ammo or 223 or 5.56 ammo and a limited amount of shot shells! still limiting you to one box

A Dalton in the Beckley area?  We're probably related.

Hope you find some ammo.
