Tattler reusable canning jar flats
« on: December 12, 2013, 07:05:22 PM »
looking for an update on the reusable lids

1 how do you like them +/-
2 recommend ?
3 how well do they work with the food saver vacuum unit for canning jars
4 how many times have you reused them

one of the postings sez replaceable seals are available

my source for the metal flats has dried up [cost too much to ship up here to the Keweenaw]
so we are looking at switching to the tattler flats
any and all info will be great fully appreciated

They take a bit to get the hang of them, but I love them. I think I have 300-400 lids of them and will put in another order to bump that number way up. I still get more non-seals with them than the metal lids, but I usually do enough processing I can stick it/them in another load.

If you are having issues getting lids, STOCK UP ON BANDS as you are still going to need them with the Tattlers.

Love my Tattlers!!  There is a bit of a learning curve on using them; you don't tighten them as tight as metal lids, wait 5 minutes after removing from canner and tighten them, let sit for 24 hours before removing ring.  I don't have any more or less failure with Tattlers than I do the metal lids. (In a normal year, I'll can between 500-600 jars.)

I've been using them for over 4 years and have used some 6 times already.  I have a few hundred lids and extra seals.  I don't store my rings on my canned items so have an abundance of rings.

There is another reusable canning lid company out there (4everrecap), but they haven't been around as long as Tattler (which I believe was back in the 70's).  4ever has had major problems with their gasket.  This is a good review in a blog about 4ever

still having a learning curve - mine fail about twice as much as my metal seals.  My big problem is that they look like they are sealed.  I wash the jars and put them downstairs, and THEN when I go down to get them, that is when I notice that they are not sealed.  But I am going to keep using them.

also, if you are planning to get more, I got this email today (although their website does not mention it at all):

Love my Tattlers.  I simply followed the instructions on the box and have had zero failures to seal.

They are definitely different to use, it takes a bit to get the hang of using them in the pressure canner.  But worth it.

They work fine with the foodsaver lid attachment most of the time.  I have had problems with a couple older jars that were a hair taller between the shoulder and top that wouldn't work with a tattler but did with a metal flat.

Order extra seals--not that they go bad, but that you LOSE THEM.  Especially if the kids help do the dishes.

I have had good success with them.  I haven't tried them with the Foodsaver attachment yet.  I use my previously used metal flats for that.

MS Thank you for the coupon code!  I placed an order.

I love Tattler lids!  Last spring they had a good sale (35% off I think) and I ordered 12 dozen of each regular and wide mouth.  I just placed an order for 12 dozen more of each plus 300 replacement rubber seals for each.  At half off how can you not?

As for issues with the lids I did have some trouble with seals when processing sweet sticky items like pie fillings, jams and jellies.  The problem went away as soon as I left a little more headspace than recommended...maybe an extra 1/4 inch.  Like a previous poster my lids would seem to be sealed after processing but I would find loose lids in the following weeks.  I think the issue was blowout around the lid during processing due to uneven pressures caused by uneven heat application where the sticky substance being canned got on the lip of the jar between the lid and glass.  In time the lid would come undone when the goo would harden and crack..  This would be akin to not wiping the lip of your jars before seating the lid.  I hope this helps all and go give the good folks at Tattler some business!

That sale is crazy. I have been wanting to switch over to them. What do I need to buy to replace my metal seals? I see on the website they have "red" lids and rings 100 count for $79.11, and they have the "white" lids and rings 100 count for $81.95. Not a big difference in price at all, just wonder if there is anything different between the two? So all I would need to buy is the lids and gasket rings if I already have a ton of metal rings to hold them on? Should I buy extra gasket rings? How long do they last?

Thanks for any help. I want to buy a 100 of each regular and wide mouth before the sale ends tonight.

I just did an order of 200 regular lids and 100 wide mouth. The sale is still on just for today. Thank you so much for posting this. It needs to be cross listed on the great deals part of this forum too.

Go to the tattler canning lids web site, when you go to check out, put "madness" in the coupon code area, it will give you 1/2 off, and no shipping charges there !

*Bump*

I have 200 regular and 100 wide mouth white lids with rings and a dozen each of the replacement rings sitting in my cart. Does anyone know the difference between the white, red and pink lids? Is it just a color thing? Also it looks like the rings are lifetime as well, but I am buying a dozen extra of each size just in case I lose some. Can someone verify the rings last as long as the lids? Sorry they don't have a FAQ on their website.

Thanks,

Patrick

If you can tomatoes or chili or beets, your white lids can end up pinkish/reddish stained.  Not a big deal, but it does bother some people so they made them to start out red.

The "lids" include one lid and one gasket.  They sell extra gaskets in case you damage (possible) or lose (likely) some.

I would order as many lids as you want/need/can afford and then get 5-10% of that number in extra rings.

you will need canning rings - the metal ring that screws onto the jar.

the discount does not show up until you are ready to check out.  then you can type "madness" into the coupon box and get the discount.

oh, and on how long the rubber rings last?  There are stories on the website of folks who bought Tattlers when they first came out in the 70s who re-found the company in the late 90s.  They say, basically, "my rings are starting to wear out.  Can I get some more?"

thanks everyone for the tips on having more headspace.  I will give that a go.

Just placed my order! I have a metal ton of rings laying around from the jars I have. Can't wait to start canning with these. With some luck my first batch will be some venison!

Like last night I canned up 8-9 jars of pineapple and mandarin oranges. I had one lid which failed to seal. I generally get NO failures with my metal lids, but maybe 1-2 per canning day with the Tattlers. I generally just eat those ones if I do not have more to can up. Like tomorrow I will likely get more pineapple and oranges at gleaners, so I will wait to recan this one to see if I can run another load... if not, it will be breakfast.

And I have also heard of the Tattler gaskets lasting since the 1970's until now.

I have to wait until they do this next year. I think they do it every Dec/Jan-ish don't they? My house has not closed yet, otherwise I would have gotten more too.

Cedar

They seem to do 2-3 deals a year, spread around outside the normal canning season.  Sometimes email, sometimes facebook, sometimes through the blogs they sponsor.

I can about 50 lbs. of tuna nearly every year.  I'm not glowing  ;D

Cedar just emailed me a good article on this subject from Oregon State University.  Maybe she can let you know how she obtained it. . . .  No worries about glowing, they way I read in to it.

Exactly why I can my own.  I can't stomach the store bought stuff anymore, now that I've tasted the difference.  That's the only negative when I run out of home canned.
