What Did You Harvest Today?
« on: July 28, 2014, 02:32:33 PM »
So I thought it would be fun to start a thread to see what we are all harvesting.

To start off the thread, when I went to check on the chickens this morning we had a few tomatoes ready to go along with the eggs I pulled from the boxes:

Today I harvested a baseball cap full of french beans, a handful of runner beans, six courgettes (three that had gone over and were like marrows), an armful of perpetual spinach, a cucumber, some chillies and three eggs. I also picked some of the first of the seasons blackberries. We have had a really hot summer for a change here in the UK and everything is about a month ahead.

Tomatoes, asparagus beans(Long Beans) , butternut squash, cucumbers ,a tomato fattened rabbit ...almost a unlucky squirrel  who taunted me just out of my comfortable handgun range.

Swiss chard, cucumbers, zucchini, and bell peppers.  What a great summer it has been so far!

I do like this thread!  Should have some okra to post by this weekend.

Mods, is this thread pin-at-the-top-worthy?  It is definitely an upbeat thing!

I harvested one 5/8"-diameter fruit of Echinocereus triglochidiatus (a.k.a. Wine Cups Cactus).  Tastes like... strawberry-flavored cactus. 8)

Awesome, glad this is taking off!

We pulled out a HUGE squash and a bucket full of tomatoes yesterday. Also got a couple handfuls of figs - I dont know about anyone else but there is nothing better than a fully ripe fig that's been warmed by the summer sun! Unfortunately the Japanese beetles agree with me so I have to fight with them over the figs :(

This evening's harvest:

Not big, and maybe 1/4 of the okra had gotten tough, but the peppers'll go into the sauce jars in a day or so and the rest made a nice side-dish at supper.

well, I don't have pictures, and it was harvested all last week, but I got 50 c of huckleberry puree for jam, so probably about 75 c of berries.  that makes 16 pints and 15 half-pints of jam.

Crookneck and straight neck squash is just about done. 15 or so quart freezer bags put up over the last month. Zucchini are still producing as quickly as we can eat and give away.  Cucumbers are slowing down but still producing. 16 pints of pickles and relish plus all the fresh cucumbers we can eat. Getting about 3-4 tomatoes/day. Doesn't look like we'll have enough to can this year. We ate the last of our 2 cantaloupe this weekend. The bush green beans are just started. Had our first meal with them sunday. Hope to get enough over the next month to put up a dozen or so quart jars. There's about 4 or 5 watermelons still ripening as well as butternut squash. Peppers, okra, and corn did not do well.

The garden is 5 raised beds 4'x8'x2' and occupies an area of about 30'x30'. One bed was done as a hugel mound and has been very happy. Compose comes from our horse barn. Neem Oil and diatomaceous earth for pest control. Fish emulsion and water from the aquaponics system for fertilizer.

Yes. Very good for frying. Their legs are sort of tough to chew in a meal so we usually left them behind, but just recently heard from my aunt that she dries them and grinds to powder. Uses that powder for soups and stews, says it's very good. I'm just drying these to check it out.

Wow! Lots of great stuff on here!
We pulled some kale, a few tomatoes and some strawberries out today.

We did a container garden on the deck this year since we were traveling back and forth a lot while we got things set up at our place. The garden rode back and forth in the back of my truck 100+ mile round trip every few weeks in the beginning... got pretty tired of carrying planters and pots by the end of it and some of the plants got whipped around by the wind on the highway but everything survived.

Once we were settled the chipmunks moved in and pretty much mowed most everything down on the deck and the deer took out the stuff they could reach, I had to build some pretty extreme "plant bunkers" to protect the rest and everything has done pretty good since then. We moved everything inside earlier this month since we are getting freezing temps at night up here (we are around 8,000 ft up here in the Rockies of CO) and so far things are still producing nicely.

Yesterday, I picked a large bowl of assorted peppers (bell, jalapeno, banana, chili).  I figure I have at least one more harvest in a couple of weeks.
