Fish Mox Forte
« on: April 06, 2018, 05:43:07 PM »
So I've been reading up on this for stocking up. We keep a small amount of medical here, probably like most of you.
Anyways, I've searched the stores to no avail, and also looked at Amazon, and struck out.
Then I happened to think about it when I was on Walmarts site. Bingo.
100 500mg tabs for $27 and change.
And it has a good exp date. This bottle is 6/2020
For those of you who keep this around, how much of it do you keep?

I have some going out of date. Just wondering if they will still be good past the exp. date.

All meds are in a dark and cool, dry area. I know there are some meds that will not work beyond the exp. date. Nice to know that fish mox is not one of them.

I look at the quantity to store in terms of how many full courses at the typical maximum adult dosage it provides.  For amoxicillin that's basically 2 grams a day and usually taken for 7-10 days for many of the infections it treats.  I go with the longer just to be safe, so 2 grams X 10 days = 20 grams (or 40 500mg tablets) for a full course.  Or 2.5 courses in a 100 tablet bottle.  The dose and the length of time varies of course, but this works for general planning purposes.  Then it's just deciding how many courses make sense for the size of your group and the length of time you're preparing for.  I store two 100 tablet bottles of amox so it's an even 5 courses, this for 6 adults and 4 kids plus 6 dogs (probably my max group size) for a 1 year SHTF prep.  Amox is just one of the antibiotics I store so we do have some alternate or second-line choices if we run out, and for the one in the group that's allergic to penicillin.

Thanks for that info. Sounds good.
1 bottle should be good for 2 of us, plus the dogs.  ;D

I'll wait about 6 months and pick another one up, and hopefully the exp date is extended
