How's the moving going?

Oh hey, didn't check the forum for a couple days. The moving went well in the end, we have moved the main stuff, though I still need to move some tools and material supplies, mainly steel and carving wood. Can't wait for the Spring to start cleaning and fixing the old forge here. Meanwhile, I found some old handtools while cleaning old junk from a basement workshop in the house, it surely comes from a woodshop in the old homestead, next to the forge. Once I start fixing the old building and the workshops in it, I plan to make a series of pictures to document the progress.
With the old barn, I've inherited a pile of wooden military boxes, used for artillery ammunition. There used to be an army range nearby and locals were buying the old boxes in bulk, to use both as cheap firewood, and as universal building material. There are many sheds and garages in the village built from these, even my new house has a small garage built that way. I'm just fooling around with one of the boxes to see what could I use them for. Unluckily they're  a little bit too low to transport rifles effectively, they would have to be laid flat, which way only two could be fitted in. I was thinking of making a HIS & HERS boxes for my and my wife, each containing our go-to ballistic and tactical gear, as we have way too much of these things and when we're packing for a range trip, it takes us too long to find what we need. This way we would each have our kit ready and the extra gear could be stored separately.

Hey sounds great. Glad you are getting the move situated.
Those ammo boxes, reminds me of the time my BIL showed me a garage up near the city that the walls were built from wooden ammo boxes. They had just stacked the boxes up and attached them together. Pretty neat.

Then there was another shed there that was sided with flat, unused, windmill fans. The fans that are used up top on windmills.

Don't know just searched it. Found canning, chickens and other stuff. Was on the TV, I'll probably need to watch on the computer so wife can watch TV. Work in progress.

I haven't watched the lids vid yet.
So far we use used lids for keeping jars clean. Some vac packing.

Yep that's what I've used them for. I noticed however that if you heat them in water the indentation in the plastisol comes out and they look like new. I got a box of several hundred used lids.

Yeah, that's pretty much how the local garages are built as well. Stack the boxes and nail them together. The guy who built mine did pretty good job, removed the lids and laid the boxes sideways, so that the inside of the garage walls is pretty much consisting of dozens of shelves. On several of them he kept the the lid and removed the bottom, so they now work as windows :D

Recently, I got one fot he new rechargeable CR123 batteries by Fenix (ARB-L16-700UP). Aside of being a normal rechargeable battery, it also has a micro-USB socket on the side and can be charged by the usb cable through many ways (such as car lighter USB adapter, various solar chargers, I even have a cheap crank/solar lantern light that has a usb output and surprisingly works. So far the battery works well. I was very happy to find out it fits into the EOtech XPS-2 (many rechargeable 123s don't, their diameter is a bit too large). I'm glad I finally have the sight powered by something so easily rechargeable. Will get couple more of those batteries for sure.

The lids vid is a little over 1 hour. Wife agreed to watch and we started but as the title says "Canning 101". I'll watch more tomorrow but probably not all of it.

Wife didn't get far on canning today. Way too much bs'in going on in there. Gals ran me off early.  :(  ::)  ???  ;D

Anyways, I helped her get the dozen hot jars from the oven and got the lids on.
It took about 5 hours (gas oven) to get those beans up to 200 degrees.
Was using a candy thermo in there to ck.

So, even though that may be a good way to LT store beans, I don't think it's economical.
We're gonna stick with beans in a bucket with diatomaceous earth sprinkled in with the beans.
5 hours of LP gas, a dozen quart jars tied up.........A bucket is just a few bucks if bought new.

I thought I have looked into this once before but I guess not. This is what I found just now.

https://www.lehmans.com/blog/is-oven-canning-of-dry-goods-a-safe-way-to-preserve

Takes a long time as you found out and apparently not safe. The temp isn't high enough to kill bacterial spores. Think Clostridium botulinum spores or others.

Sounds like you had a hen party going on.  ;D

Interesting article. Think I'll print that out.
My thinking on it is that it's a waste of time, like the article suggests.
Thanks for finding that.

Maybe a weekend too early, but I had a free afternoon.  So I butchered some apple trees.

Watched a deal on YT TV last night. They used hydrated? lime? (gotta double ck that) in water in a bucket, and submerged the eggs. They were saying 5-8 months and the eggs were still good.

Slaked lime. Get it at a builders supply, BORG. Check reply 25 here.

Wife got the chili canned. Not enough for 2 quart batches, as someone ate too much out of the pot the last 2 days.  ::)
So she ended up with 7 quarts.

Well I see you both survived.  ;D

3 half pints jars of dehydrated eggs today. Still on the uphill side of the learning curve. 15 hours.  :zombie:

15 on the eggs. At least there isn't any labor while they are drying.  ;D

Bought some replacement stuff for the storeroom. Sugar, butter.
$1.52 for a 4 pounder sugar. Cheapest I've seen for a while.
Butter $2.88 lb.

$1.52 sugar? Ouch. I guess I've been more fortunate than I thought finding sugar like I have. Saw GM flour at Kroger yesterday for $0.85 4 lb. various varieties. That is very unusual for them. Decent butter price from what I've seen.
