AR-15 Magazine Comparison
« on: November 15, 2008, 12:15:01 PM »
I had to store some new orders that had arrived recently. I figured since I had them out I might as well do a comparison. The comparison is between an HK AR-15, USGI by Bushmaster, and a MagPul PMAG all of which are 30 round 5.56x45mm magazines.

FYI: The C Products magazine by eyeballing it is the same or about the same as the Bushmaster. I did not bother with the Brownells magazine I got to test. It was a epic failure right out of the box. The follower gets stuck when pushed down. I am going to replace the floor plate, spring, and follower with MagPul products.

The HK magazine is the heaviest and largest of the the three. The HK magazine by my measurements is longer with a length of 19.3 CM. The PMAG is the second longest with a length of 19 CM. The USGI is the shortest with a 18.2 CM length. The PMAG is the lightest in weight of course, which places the USGI magazine as the second heaviest. Both the USGI and HK magazines are the same in width at 2 CM. The PMAG is just slightly less then 2 CM. Follower width is the about the same dimensions. I was having trouble pushing it in and obtaining the most accurate measurement I could do by hand with a standard ruler, but from what I can tell it is about the same.

FYI: I measured length from the bottom corner to the top ignoring the curve. I was using a standard foot long ruler.

Pictures: (Yes I know the cap was on the PMAG, but I took it off for measuring, which is noticeable as it was removed during pictures, which I took first.)

Lastly if you are curious of what I prefer, it is the PMAG. As far as metal magazines go I prefer the HK magazine. I received it this week along with the dark earth PMAGs. The HK I bought because Botach Tactical was selling the HK magazine for 30+ dollars. It was a impulse purchase as I have never seen them that cheap. The fit and finish is better then either C Products, Bushmaster, or Brownells, of which I have experience with only. The magazine also comes across as way more durable although the PMAG can take abuse much better from what I have seen on youtube. The HK magazine follower and spring set comes off as tough as the PMAG follower and spring set. For the money I would by PMAGs, but if you think plastic is crap then I would go HK despite the expense.

These are from my experiences, and your mileage may vary.

$30.00 for an HK mag?  Did they burn your fingers when you touched them?  I've never heard of them being that cheap either.

I've been shooting the PMAGS for a while & extremely pleased, even over the typical GI type mags.  I'm not sure I could justify spending the normal $50.00 for an HK mag, mags are essentially expendable kit & that would seriously hurt losing a mag that cost that much.

Nope, and I was shocked when I saw the price on them. Truth is I did not need to make the purchase, but seeing them on sale like that I could not skip on it. I had to know what all the talk was about. Ok 39.95 is the actual price, but that is still better then 50+ dollars they are always sold for on the market. I just remembered 30 when I saw it because it shocked me as well.

I agree about the PMAGs. They are cheaper then most, tougher then all, and work extremely well. I just had to know about the HK mag is all.

Wow, even their PMAGS are cheaper.  Nice link, thanks!

On a side note and somewhat related.

DPMS 10rd. mags, are by all appearances junk.  I had to order a couple so my wife could use her AR to deer hunt with this year, & while they didn't arrive in time for us to take them with us, they were waiting for us today when we got home.

First thing I did was push down on the follower & it hung up nose down in the bottom of the stinking mag.  Looks like about 50 cents worth of materials for a damn mag they charge $20.00 for.  I'm completely disgusted with them, I'm hoping they feed ammo okay as they're only going to be used next weekend (our last weekend to hunt) & then only for subsequent deer seasons.  I'm going to try to get to the gun club, but I don't know if I will or not, to test them.

I may do a write-up on 'em in gear review if they perform as piss poor as their workmanship seems to indicate.  Who knows though, maybe I'll be surprised.

The Brownells mag I bought was bunk. Pushed down and it would get stuck. Sometimes it would stick a quarter way down, and sometimes halfway down the magazine body. I figure replacing the floor plate, spring, and follower will fix it.

Can you get a repair kit for the 10 rounder?

Unfortunately no, that was my first thought too when it hung up.  I flipped it over to look at the bottom & it's not removable.  It looks as if it's pressed on then pinned front and back so that's it's permanently attached.

I have a few PMAG followers laying around & thought no big deal, I'll just slap another one in.  Doesn't look like it's going to be possible.

PMAG PMAG PMAG!!  Cheaper, lighter, durable as hell.

Check out this video where they had a PMAG that took a round through it and broke the spring.  They stretched out what was left of the spring, loaded it, and tested it out.  Pretty f'ing amazing...

Be careful with Botach.  A lot of bad experiences with them from reviews on various forums.  However, there are also people that have had nothing but great service from them.  So, naturally, YMMV.

One thing I like about the GI mags is that exactly ten of them fit into a Pelican 1200 case.  I think I can get 7-8 PMAGS in there but not as tight.  The GIs look so good you think that Pelican designed that case specifically with them in mind.

Good to know.

Thanks for the tip.

Dittos regarding Botach.  They have good stuff and special prices time to time, but receiving an order from them that is not all jacked up is an occasion for celebration.
