Hi Amy,
Thanks for the offer. I'm interested also.
My wife made soap from a kit a couple of times.
The last time was with shea butter. It turned out good and made a good shaving soap.
What is the difference between regular and shaving soap?
Thanks again,
Viking

If I put together a pdf manual would anyone be interested?  Would love to pass on my years of being a professional soap maker to others.  Been manufacturing soap and spa products to spas/salons.  Can help you source local ingredients without spending a fortune too.  Just my way of wanting to help out!

Thanks,

Amy

Amy..... Would love one if you got it together...

Yes I would love something like that. My mother makes soap and I am trying to get her to do the samething to past it along too. I think the more information we can put out there the better off people would be.

Thanks for the LOLs! That stated perhaps there needs to be a thread for those among us who are particularly hirsute. :)

while we are waiting for badbeamer, I would like to direct everyone over to http://thesurvivalpodcast.com/forum/index.php?topic=4536.msg43822#msg43822 where I gave a quick how to.  especially the links in the first post.  Those links will give a very detailed list of ingredients and supplies for a first-time soaper.  This is the link I used the first time I soaped.  very helpful stuff.  There is also a small discussion on how to make lye at home.

two questions, two answers.

yes.  handcrafted soap must be made with lye.  as the blinky on www.millersoap.com says, "No lye, no soap."  but do not be afraid.  lye is no more dangerous than bleach if you prep for it properly.

Castille soap is pure olive oil soap.  lye, water olive oil.
It is nice to use, it is easy to make, but it has a tendency to dissolve in water, making it almost not worth the effort.  at least,so I have found.  A nice bar of handcrafted soap is better than an expensive bar of Castille soap bought at the grocery.
