Will this be lye soap?  Is there a way to learn to make castille soap?...anybody?
Best walkthrough I have seen for Castile Soap is from Soapchix.

My wife has made several diffrent types of soap, melt and pour, grocery store soap (most all of the ingredients are bought at the store) , lye soap to our laundry soap (cost around $3.00 to make for 5 gallons). If you need the recipe I could post it.

Just popped on the forum before going to work (yes on christmas, booo).

I would love to learn to make soap, and also specialty soaps, like shaving soaps.  I have tried some hand made shaving soaps, and not all are created equal. would love to learn the trick to it.

My wife has some soap making experience, but we can't find a local source for lye anymore. I'd be interested to hear any suggestions. I know that we can strain water through wood ash to make it, but she says that's no good for bars, only liquid soap.

lye.  what a sticking point.  Are there any soapers at your local farmers market?  chances are they might be able to sell some lye to you.  As long as you do not go into business against them, kwim?  But if you are just a hobby-ist soaper, they will probably be cool with it.

also, straining the wood ash for lye must make hard bars - that is what our grandmothers made.  hard bars of soap, and they made their own lye from wood ash.  there must be a way.

Agreed. Maybe it just takes longer for the water to evaporate out, leaving the solids behind?

It is my understanding that making lye for soap in this manner can be done, but there is an issue with it.  The lye strength varies, as such it is unreliable.  What soap makers would do when this was the only source was to "over fat" the soap, IE add a percentage more fat than the strongest concentration of lye could react with.  This should guarantee the soap will cure (no lye left over) and helped the soap moisturize with some of the leftover oils.

istm that, perhaps on another thread, someone posted a good test to see if the lye was strong enough by melting a feather in the solution?

Welcome atevan1... glad to have you on board. Check out the other threads about soapmaking here on the forum -- even without a pdf, there is much great information from experienced soapers here. Just use the search option.

Also, if you get the chance, drop by the intro thread. Glad to have you here!

Learning how to make soap is a skill that should be preserved.
Lord knows there are many enough people who don't know how to use soap, much less make it.
If not too late, please include me - is this going to be all on one pdf?  Or a class in series?
Thanks,  Sidney

Yes... I also pm'd her and got no response, so if we have other experienced soapers interested in this project, it is obvious that there is huge interest!

I am doing a herbal soapmaking workshop in the fall as part of my Master Gardener instructional series. Once I have some test batches, I'll take photos and publish the process here. How does that sound? I'm not a pro at it but I figure people can learn from my mistakes...err I mean experience! ;)

Oh please please count me in.  I brought a barrel of ashes home from the BOL and am hoping this will work to make soap with (from the wood stove).  So I would love your knowledge and experience.  Thanks! TBM
