Yes, absolutely there will be another run of them in the very near future.  The price will be going up, though.  :)

Those do look great.  I will order a couple when I get my taxes (The boys would just go nuts over them).

Until then I may take the one I got from the I Corp Sgt Major back in 1991 or 92 (His name escapes me) out of retirement.  Having just found my box of "Cool Army Stuff" as my kids call it.  Wonder what else is in the box I've forgotten about?  Haven't opened it in a number of years. :)

Hey whoa there, darlin'.  I LIKE your coins.  I just didn't want a whole buncha people following suit and making it difficult for people to get info about the TSP challenge coins.

I think you oughta start a thread in the campfire board about showing off your challenge coins.  I love seeing them.  :)

Oh, definitely!

That was cool, Duke.

We need a thread just for people to post their challenge coins.

Thanks for sharing that, Duke!

Im not trying to be the thread wet blanket here seriously Im just curious but...well...what is the point of a challenge coin? Are they just to have and pull out of your pocket and look at? If thats the case why do some people say they are buying multiples. Is it just something to spend money on and support the show? Is it a way to spread awareness of the show? Because Im not paying 8 dollars or whatever per person I want to tell about the show. Why are they called "challenge" coins? If its just something shiny to look at and thats it thats ok Im just wondering. And finally I think Jack brought this up in an episode but I didnt listen to that one yet but why cant we get these things in silver?

From the very first page of the thread:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_coin

1.  You are not required to buy anything to support the show.

2.  It's going to be $12.95 a person next time, since we sold out of this batch before they were even sent to us.

3.  Most folks bought 2 or more of these coins.  Challenge coins of this variety are collector's pieces (we will be doing different versions of these coins in the next few years), and they are to be carried in your pocket or bag, or purse or whatever you carry as a token of membership in an exclusive club, or as gifts for those who you know who are also members.

4. We CAN get them in silver, and plan to get them in silver fairly soon (in the next year or so).  The issue with getting them in silver is that they are NOT viable as investment pieces, and probably never will be.  We'd have to buy several thousand of them at once in order for them to be anywhere close to being as inexpensive as the silver you can get in a coin shop.  We simply don't have the money to put down $40,000 to $50,000 worth of cash JUST on silver coins and silver coins ONLY.  That is neither logical, nor reasonable, considering the investment we are already making on other items that members and listeners want, and have proven that they will purchase.  If you've ever looked at small-time collector's pieces in silver (like the John Galt coin at John Galt Gifts), you'll see that they seem to think that $38 an ounce is a fair price for a silver coin.  I'm not okay with that, and neither is any reasonable investor.

HTH :)

I buy them for several reasons:

1. They are a great token to share the word about Jack's show.

2. Challenge coins are a tradition steeped in history for many, many decades and there are tons of them out there which people often share and trade. I have several from geocaching. ( I was in the military but my group never developed a challenge coin.)

3. Ya know...in case I go to IHOP for a TSP meetup and get challenged! I don't want to have to buy everyone's breakfast!

4. They're just cool.

I'm not tryin' ta sell ya somethin ya don't want. I'm just answerin' the question.

Two questions...
« Reply #149 on: January 27, 2010, 11:24:58 PM »
What are challenge coins (they're gorgeous by the way) and how can I get my hands on one/some? I saw that they are sold out in the store...

Ok, edited this to add that I looked up Challenge Coin on wiki and have educated myself. Would love to get some though. Does anyone know when they will be available again?
