Ballistics Gel Test (Videos)
« on: November 15, 2009, 11:24:07 AM »
I spent this Saturday doing something I enjoy more than just about anything.
Shooting.  But today, it was spent doing much more than plinking or bench rest shooting.
Myself and TSP Forum member 123123, who's too shy to post this himself  , were able to experiment with ballistics gelatin for the first time.
A friend of ours who teaches a ballistics  and tactical medical course for the local law enforcement agencies wanted to test various types of 7.62x39mm in blocks of ballistics gel as well as a comparison to 5.56/.223 for his class. We were more than happy to oblige ;D .
123123 was chomping at the bit to test out his new Arsenal-converted Saiga SGL21,
(which BTW, K-Var is running a fantastic deal on at $499 as of the posting of this thread), and I realized that this little experiment might be found interesting to some of our members. So we decided to video this and post it.
So our tools for this test were as follows:
Saiga SGL21 rifle chambered in 7.62x39mm
Bushmaster AR-15 Carbine chambered in 5.56mm

We placed the ballistics gel at 10 yards away from our shooting position.
The ammo used in the test was:
Brown Bear 123Gr. FMJ 7.62x39mm
Wolf 123Gr. HP 7.62x39mm
Custom loaded 125Gr. Soft Point 7.62x39mm
and for comparison,
Lake City 5.56mm NATO

123123 is voicing the opening video.
I'm the voice you hear calling out the technicals right before each shot.
I apologize about this being broken down into so many videos, but we don't have any video editing software at our disposal at the moment.

I know it lists 12 videos but the 12th one cut off early due to a full SD card and the 3rd video doesn't exist. (wrong numbering)
I was blown away (no pun intended)by the wound channels created by each bullet.
I've been shooting for as long as I have been able to pick up a firearm, but rarely have I thought about the impact inside of tissue.
I've seen video of ballistics gel on TV before as well, especially on The History Channel's "Lockn'Load" series, but to see it up close and personal is just pretty cool.
Everyone had a blast, after we finished with the gel, we just did some good old fashioned shooting.
It was indeed a good day.
