Hi all,

I just got a set of lee reloading dies, they are LEE brand 44 special #90516.    I was told they would load 44 mag as well, but I've seen another set with a different number (90966)

as simple as i can make it..............can I load 44 mag with these dies?????

thanks,

beagle

The magnum case differs from the special case only in length, one tenth of an inch IIRC. So, no concern regarding the sizing die since this is a straight wall case.

These cartridges use a roll crimp. The amount of crimp is adjusted by turning the crimp die down or up. So, for special cases, you have to turn the crimp die in a tenth of an inch more to get the same crimp that you would put on a magnum case.

Only real recommendation I have for the .44 mag, is to put a fairly heavy, roll crimp on them. I have a Redhawk and have impact hammered bullets out enough under recoil to stop the action from rotating.

I agree about giving a heavy roll crimp.

Powder:  you can get great performance with Hodgdon H110 or Winchester 296, but BE CAREFUL!!!

Yeah,
THE magnum powder for 44 mag imho is H110/W296 ( Most know but I will say it anyway just in case- these the same powder packaged under 2 different brands).

You might check the levergun forums reloading sections for tips on bullet selection and OAL; Some shapes and OALS feed well in some guns and jam others from what I have read.

Be careful...... a strong roll crimp is no substitute for proper neck tension.

In fact too agressive of a roll crimp can sabotage the neck tension because it can make the case buckle a bit and make the bullet fit looser in the cartridge case..

Good advice on that Blue Smoke. Happens to my 44-40s on occasion just like you say.
