.22 WMR semi, .303 bolt action, or DB 12 gauge?
« on: March 02, 2010, 06:45:45 AM »
So given the choice for homestead defence, should I chose a .22 WMR semi auto, a .303 bolt action or a double barrel shotgun? Pistols are illegal here so both would have to be rifles.

I'm leaning towards a .22 WMR just because of the rate of fire. I know it's not a 'man stopper' (although could be leathal if fired accurately), but I guess it would be a good perswader at closer range.

I would lean towards the shotgun. Outside of the Zombie Apocalypse, you probably won't be able to make used of the longer range of the .303 and that is large and heavy weapon to be using inside of your residence...the most likely site of a defensive shooting. The .22 Magnum certainly could work...but probably won't stop an intruder nearly quickly as the 12 gauge. I would get the shotgun and as much training as possible.

Is "all of the above" an acceptable answer?  ;D

all of the above
Duly noted hehe!

So you would still want the shotgun even though it's only got 2 shots? Granted the shottie would have more stopping power, but the  WMR is semi auto and could have a 30 shot mag.

I would go with the dbl shottie.  you can put slugs in it, 00, #4,or #8 bird shot and trust me... one shot would definately get everyone's attention.  The 22 WMR is not as.... intimidating once fired.

My thinking is that at night, up close, I might only be able to get off one or two shots before the bad guy is on top of me. The shotgun is, in my mind, much more likely to put him down decisively. The .22 WMR might well bleed him out, but that could well be after he injures or kills me.

Thanks for you imput.
Yea, I can see the reasoning behind that.
What kind of effective range has a shottie got?

slugs... ~ 100 m
bird shot... ~ 10 m
00... 10-20 m (at this range you will have options other then shooting)

Interesting, I didn't realise a shotgun could be effective at that sort of range, thanks for the info. :)

If you were on foot, in a bug out situation, in a urban environment with armed gangs roaming, which of the three weapons would you think prove most usefull?

Once again, I would lean towards the dbl...  I think it has the best chance of concealment.

Looks like this was asked before, but where do you live that pistols are illegal?

AU? UK?
You can't run away on a world that's round.
You're only comin' back to where you'll be found.

Based on thorough experiments involving kissing in the rain, exposing shoulders to direct sunlight, and dancing by the light of a silvery moon,  I have found that, within the bounds of frostbite and decency, hapiness is inversely proportional to the amount of clothing worn.

for a one and only? The 12 gauge, and practice accuracy and reload time.

If you get the shotgun watch the choke if you want to shoot slugs.  I would go with a shotgun also for HD when a handgun is not an option.

If you are telling me I can only ever have one gun, and it has to be a long gun - none of these 3 make the top 10.

To reply to your post, the answer is 303. I am going to assume from your info that this will be some variant of Enfield, which means accurate, slick bolt action and 10 rd magazine fed by stripper clips. I can maintain a pretty good rate of fire with my Mk5.

The real qualifier here, is your indication of 'homestead' defense and not 'home' defense. Inside the house, 12ga is king of stopping power. But if you need to hold down a couple acres and engage coyotes, wolves, bandito's - etc, the longer range and stopping power of the rifle win the day.

To me, with a single gun qualifier as stated, I would be looking at a semi auto, detachable magazine carbine. Take your pick of AK/AR/ Mini 14. I would even take a lever action 30/30 over the 3 listed options.

the autorifle. The .22 mag, using hp ammo ,has the same power as a 9mm pistol using hp's, the 2 shot shotgun is a bad choice and the bolt action is even worse. Most shots in combat miss the target completely, and most hits are poor hits. At typical distances, the shot pattern is only 2-4" wide, you CAN miss with it, very easily indeed.
