win. 94ae 44 mag saddle gun - good loads???
« on: January 22, 2010, 09:53:09 AM »
the rifle is a winchester 94ae .44mag saddle gun

I finally have all components EXCEPT powder!!

I bought 500 240 grain SWC cast lead bullets, what do you suggest for a good load using these?  It will be used for plinking mostly, but it would be great if the load would work for hunting!!

also, what would be the best powder to get?

thanks,

beagle

I am not sure about the 94, but all of my lever guns have issues using SWC bullets. They feed smoother using a RNFP, as the lip on the SWC tends to catch the edge of the chamber, or anything else it can grab.
You might make up some dummy rounds and try them before you load too many up with powder.

As far as which powder, I really like Trail Boss and Clays powders for my 45 Colts, but they are not up to hunting velocities at all. Just good fun rounds that work for me in competition.

You can always check out the powder manufacturers websites for load data. Hodgdons is one of the best ones in my opinion.

H110 or IMR 4227 are both good for 44mag. I like 4227 because in most loads it takes up enough space that a double charge is not possible.

I have the Winchester M94 Trapper length 44 mag.   SHHHHHHH! keep this a secret it feeds 250gr Kieth SWC bullets out of a RCBS mould perfectly.

I usually load them over 8gr of Unique.

I've been very pleased.

Accurate too.....1.5" groups at 50 yds.  Open sights, over a sand bag rest of course.
