What kind of BOL can you get for 2500 Dollars?
« on: December 11, 2008, 11:01:26 AM »
My buddy Howell Dodd (Haldo here at the forum) who I mentioned in today's show has a small little BOL down on Lake Brownwood, it ain't a 40 acre farm but for 2500 bucks it is pretty cool and pretty remote and has access to a huge lake.  Check it out,

Trailer - $1300
Land -   $1200

Having a nice little BOL and vacation spot just three hours drive from you place in Suburbia for less the the price of a decent used car?  Priceless!

Thats  A great deal. Everyone should be trying to find something like this. Can you please post a little info on how the property was found, I am sure it wasn't Realtor.com. It seems to me that a lot of people see buying property as a sort of mysterious or scary process.  If you can afford a dependable used car you can afford land.

Trust me folks If I can you can. I am dis functional, disabled and dead broke and I got it done.  I paid 5 times as much but It has a well and a place to live.

Well lets see, Haldo is a sorry lazy ass and does not want to post his own pics.  Here is some more from him on the place.

"I have 2 50x100 so its 100ft by 100 ft.  You have to have 2 lots to be able to put a septic in.  I have a honey wagon and I just pull it to the rv dump down the road.  For other than drinking water I made a 10 gallon water barrel with a bilge pump and drive down to the boat ramp and fill her up.  Luckily my father in law lives behind me and I mooch electricity off him but I also have a 12 volt battery with a 12” x6” solar panel that tops it off when Im not there.  Sometimes when I drive in I just use battery power until the next day.

There is a store out there that has fresh meat and hardware so I hardly have to take anything but my 4 wheeler.  I also have 2 6 gallon water jugs I take fresh water in just because I can.  FYI it sleeps 5 and the main bed is a real full size bed.  Heres some pics."

Here are some of the pics Howell sent in the above email (I even cleaned them up specifically the Pano one)

Here is link to a Panoramic of the area http://survivalpodcast.net/images/camphaldo/pano.jpg  I did not want to post that as an image here because it is so wide and will jack up the forum.

I will ping him about this thread and see if he will chime in with a bit of the "how" behind getting such a good deal.  Oh and may be someone can teach him how to focus when taking a pic of a deer,  ;D

Thanks Jack, I guess I never knew how much easier it was just to email it to you. I found the place because my father in law lives out there.  When we saw a vacant lot behind him we bought it for about $800.  It was rocky and worthless except to camp on.  The lot next to me had great trees so I tracked down the owner and he was willing to sell it for $500 to quit paying taxes on it.  He bought it years ago when his kids lived at home to have access to the boat ramp.

Now I had a 100 by 100 lot. We tried a pop-up which was great until you had to pop it down and almost cost me my marriage.  Sold that hunk of junk and found this hunk out there for sale by a retiree.  I will tell you the place is called Thunderbird Bay and there are annual dues.  You get a boat ramp and a swimming pool and, my favorite, you can ride ATVs on the street and the sheriff cant do a thing.  You can google it and propably get teh number to the office, they are nice people and could direct you to someone willing to give up there lot cheap. The neighboring properties are Harbor Point and Tamarac Mountain which are much the same.

There is a fire department, 3 restaurants and a store with everything from Hardware to fresh meat and veggies.  My nephew spent a weekend down there and when we left he said it was like leaving a whole other world, its just simple.

It was originally subdivided to accomodate just what I have or maybe even tents.  When the bottom fell out of the real estate market people started buying multiple lots and retiring there with double wides.  I can totally retire at 59 and buy a house out there and live the rest of my life.  Its listed in May Texas by the  way.

I call it deer camp because the deer roam through you yard throughout the day and night.  Its pretty cool.

Looks good! I took that pic at the end of a hard day trimming trees.  You can still see some of them.  I traded the wood to a guy in exchange for mowing.

It was very rough when we bought it. We initially named it Camp Fofineek because we got so many chiggers from cleaning underbrush.  Once that was done a 50 lb bag of sulpher pellets did the trick on the chiggers and fleas from the deer.

In Google Earth type in 100 comanche, 76857, that will give you a look at the area.  Its about 2 hours West of Fort Worth.

Haldo.

Thanks  for sharing,  Your BOL looks like a winner and what a price! I hope that it inspires 100 others to do the same.

Congrats!
