Am I missing something?
« on: April 23, 2010, 03:38:10 PM »
I was sitting here looking at various silver coins and what not. currently they pretty much all have a value of about $25+ each. so what happens when tshtf? The smallest item becomes worth $25? why is there not a lesser faced valued coin out there?

There are smaller denominations. Look up junk silver. It is old US silver coinage. These are mostly 90% silver. Currently, silver prices put these at roughly 13x face value... so a silver dime is worth ~$1.30 today.

since the value of the silver is based in its weight and not the art work on it (unless its numismatic), snipping a 1 oz coin in half would give you half and oz and therefore half the price.  This was historically done when the world used real money and is the origin of terms like "pieces of eight" and "bits" etc.

Don't forget junk silver either-

Notice that a modern nickel is worth more melted down than a modern quarter.
