SURIVIVAL PRIMER; THERMOREGULATION

Swanson

Regulating your body temperature properly is essential to survival.

Ever spend an extended length of time exposed to the climatic effects of the outdoors?

In many survival and crisis scenarios, it is possible that you may find yourself exposed to the elements.

Being exposed to the “elements” means being exposed to temperature changes and flux that may cause you harm.

Are you ready for this eventuality?

What do you know about thermoregulation?

Do you know how to layer your clothing properly?

THERMOREGULATION

Your body regulates its temperature through metabolism and strives to maintain itself at favorable core body temperature constantly.

Fluctuations in your general core body temperature of +/- a few degrees of 98.6°F can be severely debilitating and/or directly compromise your survival.

Environmentally, body heat is gained or lost through five possible ways:

•   Conduction
•   Convection
•   Radiation
•   Respiration
•   Evaporation

If the gain or loss is too much, you may experience hypothermia or hyperthermia –

Here’s a useful illustration from Cody Lundin’s book, 98.6 Degrees, The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive… <BUY THIS BOOK>

LAYERING CLOTHING

To protect against the elements, learn to properly approach the layering of your clothing.

Here is a decent article on the subject…

Damn anti-cotton sentiment. I'm going to die in the cold someday, and they'l lblame it on the cotton drawers.

Great article swanson.

chris,

Thanks for the reply.

I figured this topic had to be covered.

Most folks take it for granted until it's in their face in a survival scenario.
