How to keep beavers from eating your trees
« on: September 27, 2010, 02:15:27 PM »
In Episode 517 there was a caller who had a beaver problem.

My family uses a solution that is pretty effective and here are some pictures I promised in the show's comments:

Left the other two images cold for our 56k friends.

Basically you have to put metal wire mesh around the tree and zip tie it closed. You want the mesh to be solid but not too tight around the tree since it needs to grow. It doesn't have to go very high (I'd say about 2 feet is good) because beavers are not climbing animals.

You do not need to protect coniferous trees as the beavers won't eat those.

Yup that works, I was surprised Jack didn't know of that... pretty common solution

I'd rather have it and not need it, than not have it when I do need it.

Yes indeed.

A .22 applied to the appropriate place & beaver makes a fine, rich stew. ;)

I would be torn between a beaver hat and watching a fairly rare cool animal;

Rare?  Really?

They aren't rare around here, they're mostly a nuisance.

I guess it depends where you live, most areas that have beavers here have one family for about 2 lakes but it's illegal to kill them. Then again here once protected our trees don't get eaten.

it's not unheard of for people to use dynamite on beaver dams on their property.  Illegal, but not uncommon.
