AT&T Comms Bunker For Sale
« on: October 24, 2010, 12:04:35 PM »
For those that are curious, here is a really good walk through video of a 8,000sq ft AT&T comms nuclear proof bunker that is (or probably was) up for sale. I would love to turn one of these into a home.

Here's a partial description:

Quote
Tour of commo bunker for sale in USA. $440k USD. contact zibbix for details...
Perfect for a server farm, located on fiber optic internet backbone cable. has the cooling system in place for your hot running computers. backup generator, 3 phase power, very tough nut to crack.

Couldn't get the video to embed, so here's the link instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATUfnWmIpmk#

If I had 440K then it would be a done deal.  That is if I could get the boss (aka my wife) to say ok.

Yeah! That is pretty cool!  Deck it out some more and it's home.  ;D
(I would want to plant some trees around it, tho. Maybe some flowers? Yeah!)

The real beauty of it is that these comm bunkers are located all over the US along the long haul lines that the gov considered important to the continuity of the US. There are also many microwave sites that have gone up for sale as well. Fiber lines have rendered a lot of the stations obsolete due to the fact that it is impervious to EMP.

Back in '08 American Tower sold off a bunch of the microwave sites for literally pennies on the dollar just in land value.

It's not just the gov that builds really cool hidey holes and abandons them. AT&T has a couple of facilities in the eastern US that are more than 400' underground, that were taken over from the gov when they wanted out.

If that is all they are asking for it that is a good freaking deal. I was expecting closer to 2 mil with all of that working equipment: I say lets start a survival commune! Who's in?

Nice facility!! 4ft thick batteryroom floor on springs with a 2ft thick base floor is a nice addition. Its in great shape too. if you want anything better than that, you better like sliding blast doors and long tunnels between rooms. i would love a Titan II silo house, those are built to tilt

That was very cool. I was a little confused by the set up that the owner installed though. He had a bedroom, but no sign of food storage or kitchen space. Maybe it just wasn't included in the video.
Someplace like that would be great for a bunch of people to use together. Seems like a bit much for one person / family.

One of the contractors I worked for a couple of years ago had me as the lead mechanic for several of the big phone companies cell sites, I did all the mechanical PM's on the HVAC, pumps, battery rooms, exhaust systems. I had several sites like the one in the video but more updated to todays standards. Had to go through quite the background checks to get a special ID that allows me access to these remote locations. I always dreamed about owning one of them when I was there, never heard of any for sale though. The great part is the ID I have is issued by the government and supposedly will allow me through quarantined or blocked off areas also has special routing code to allow phone use during emergencies when everything else is cut off, but I have never tried using it that way yet. Still good for another 3 years... ;D Hope I never need it!

mxitman, do you have to enter the star key+ a 3digit code for priority access to the system? and is it for the landline or cellular system?

yea, i believe it's good for either cell or landlines. I'm sure there are some people on here with the same access for emergency responders, government types.

This reminds me of the bunker they are selling spots in for 50K per person. Looks to be the same construction.

It is basically the same thing. These things were built basically from cookie cutter plans. The one is the video you posted was also AT&T, you can see the logo on the door when he opens up the topside.
