Goat Island, Caddo Lake Texas----trip report
« on: November 24, 2010, 06:28:35 PM »
This weekend (Nov 20th) marked Kristy and my 6th anniversary.  Six years ago we had our honeymoon planned for some camping out on Goat Island in Caddo Lake. For those that are not failure with Caddo Lake, it is not like any other lake I know.  Some would call it a swamp.  It is not just open water, but the world’s largest cypress forest.  It is a maze of sloughs and channels and boat roads.  Goat Island is in the dark heart of this cypress forest.

Well as luck would have it, our outfitter broke her leg and was stuck in Houston just a week before we got married.  We made a quick change of plans and had a great time. We put off the Goat Island trip

The years have passed and no plans were made to make a trip out to the island to camp, but this summer I bought a canoe.  It occurred to me that I no longer had to rent one to make the trip and our anniversary was coming up soon.

We headed off Friday afternoon.  The sun was getting low in the sky when we arrived at the launch. Looking out over the water in Patterson Slough was a thrilling sight. Spanish moss hanging from bald cypress, I did not care for the idea of navigating the maze of cypress for the first time in the dark, so we headed out to a nearby state park for the night. It was a nice night, but not as isolated as we were hoping for. We got up early and headed back to the launch.

Heading out to explore the island

Damn, I am batting out of my league

A short way into out exploration, we found someone’s ole primitive shelter.  Looks a little drafty.  Maybe next time out we will fix up the place a bit

Heading back to camp.  This open space with a fire ring might just be a great spot for a larger group.

It is our anniversary after all.  And who said the cork screw on a SAK was useless.

This little fella caught me by surprise. Got WAY too close before I saw it, and I had an eye out for them.

The weather was great for the whole trip and a full moon to boot.

This was one incredible trip.  The dark waters, the hanging Spanish moss, the isolation and the chance to share this place with my wife all added up to make this one of the best outdoors experiences of my life.

I also think that it would be a great place to gather some of my brethren here and at the Hoodlums around to share some dirt.

Those are beautiful pictures, drthumbs. I'll bet that was one great trip.

By the way, for those of you who don't know, Caddo is the only natural lake in all of Texas.

I love Caddo Lake but you could not pay me to camp on any of the islands. Holy Cow and your wife did that on purpose?

That is one of the most amazing looking places!!!    I love dark and murky.   It almost seem pre-cambian or something.  Just absolutely magical.

Great pictures, you caught so much of the spirit of the place.

Add that to the long list of places I have to visit.

Thanks

Thanks for sharing your experience and all of the pictures! Gives a "personal" feel to TSP once again. And congratulations on the anniversary!

I was going to say this, too. One of these days I'll run into someone who shares my interests and hopefully be considered "lucky" as well ;)

Great pics! I'm not familiar with Goat Island. I'm gonna have to check it out sometime.
