Another type of Redneck DIY smoker

I first saw this in a popular science magazine. The pictures are small unless you subscribe but if you look at it closely you can figure out what they did. Pretty much just disconnecting the coil element from the base of the electric burner and running it into the clay pot. Then throw woodchips, a grate and a rack of ribs, then cover with a clay base and you have a simple smoker.

I haven't tried it yet but will hopefully get around to it sometime.

This is similar to the one Alton Brown from food network made one several years ago and no tools required.

Here is a link to one picture of a number of pictures in how I built mine.  I used a Metal Trash Can, a hot plate, an old cast iron skillet, and a replacement grill from a round grill.  As shown a wool blacket thrown over it to hold in heat.  It works very well.
