Roane County WV Whitetail
« on: January 09, 2011, 05:58:00 PM »
Wanted to share some pics of a nice 8 point that I got this year in Roane County, WV.  Probably average size to most people but for Roane County its bigger than most.  Lots of hunting pressure in the area and a lot of people hunting for meat out of necessity rather than sport.  On top of that with only a few law enforcement officers in a large area, poaching is a constant problem.

This is my first approach of the deer.  The picture doesn't show it but the deer was flopping and rolling down a hill when it got its head stuck in this fallen tree.  It saved a lot of dragging up hill, lol.

I cut the tenderloin into steaks and was lazy with the rest, I had it all ground into hamburger and breakfast sausage.  I usually make jerky but not this year.  I tried to find someone to make bologna but with no luck.  Biltong is definitely on the agenda for next year.

Great deer!  Wrap your steaks in thick cut bacon before you grill them.  OMG!  Ijust took a doe during the final week of archery season.  Ended up with 11 nice filet sized steaks.  Enjoy the fruits of your harvest my friend!  Happy hunting!

Very nice deer!  Also inspiring as I've been looking at Roane county for a possible BOL spot.  ;)

Not average for Washington state!  Beautiful deer, with a good curl!  Is most of the hunting on public or private land in WV?

In the areas that I hunt its mostly private.  There are no public hunting lands in Roane County but there is about 2600 acres of public land just outside of Roane County in Jackson County.  Roane County isnt nearly as populated as some other counties and I'm sure that in those counties more people seek out public land.  Where I'm at in the northern panhandle private land to hunt is hard to come by.  There just isn't enough of it.  I have friends who travel several hours to their hunting camps in less populated areas.  I travel 3.5 - 4 hours to get to Roane County.

Not too shabby Leo, a fine Roane specimen. It's hard to get nice kills in Roane county with so many fellows needing the meat and some having to hunt 2 or 3 year round. We've got some big ones in Gilmer where I hunt, even the does get huge; some times bigger than the bucks. If I had the money, I'd buy up some of the land in Roane. Shame.  :-\

Got my mount today.  Thought I'd throw up some glamour shots for you guys.  At first he was kind of upset about where he was placed on the wall.  As he hung there he started to warm up to the spot and by the time I took the last picture he had even cracked a smile.

Pouting.

Warming up to the idea.

Cracking a smile.
