Coin weigts for PMs
« on: February 09, 2011, 09:22:56 AM »
There is a lot of talk about saving old coins for their PM content. A silver quarter is worth so many dollars, etc. And we expect to barter with them after the crash. But I did not see anyplace telling me how many coins to an ounce of silver. So I finally worked it out myself.

Here is the short version.

1909 - 1982 Copper Lincoln Cent
9.595 coins per (avoirdupois) ounce copper
10 coins = 1.0422 ounces copper

1938 through 1942-D and 1946 - 2011 Jefferson Nickel
7.56 coins per av. ounce copper
8 coins = 1.0582 ounces copper

1946 - 1964 Silver Roosevelt Dime
13.82 coins per 1 troy ounce silver
14 coins = 1.0127 troy ounces silver

1932 - 1964 Silver Washington Quarter
5.5295 coins per 1 troy ounce silver
6 coins = 1.0667 troy ounces silver

1948 - 1963 Silver Franklin Half Dollar
2.7648 coins per 1 troy ounce silver
3 coins = 1.0851 troy ounces silver

1964 Silver Kennedy Half Dollar
2.7648 coins per 1 troy ounce silver
3 coins = 1.0851 troy ounces silver

1965 - 1970 Silver Kennedy Half Dollar
6.7616 coins per 1 troy ounce silver
7 coins = 1.0353 troy ounces silver

If you want to see the details of my calculations, and for more on the Kennedy and Eisenhower coins I have a longer document I can email. 3 pages in Word format. 44KB

...1938 through 1942-D and 1946 - 2011 Jefferson Nickel
7.56 coins per av. ounce copper
8 coins = 1.0582 ounces copper...
Just to add to this great list, since nickel is going for $12.90/av. lb. right now, these Jefferson Nickels are also 25% nickel, so

22.6799 coins per av. ounce nickel
23 coins = 1.01416 av. oz nickel

Silver Dollars

1.293 coins per troy oz.
1 coin = .7734 oz troy.

Thanks, Tex!

I haddn't done all the math on the nickel content, just figured to multiply by 3.
