Super Cat Alcohol Stove!
« on: February 17, 2011, 01:47:47 PM »
I took a little bit of time here and on google to do some research on the best type of cooking / boiling method to keep in the GHB and came across the SuperCat Alcohol Stove - http://jwbasecamp.com/Articles/SuperCat/index.html

I have some sterno cans and although I've used them in the past out on the Apalachain Trail for a 6 day hike I dont remember it really getting a good boil going for me. So I dont want to go with sterno as a solution. Also it seems like keeping a small bottle of denatured alcohol in a waterproof bag would be even better and lighter than a can of sterno.

1 3oz cat food can
1 paper hole punch
1 flexible measuring device
a few oz denatured alcohol

I even found a template to mark the holes - http://zenstoves.net/Templates/TemplateSuperCat.GIF

This looks super simple to make. I think myself and my 11 year old will take part of this weekend to go get the supplies and get one going. Anyone else play with one of this design?

Couldnt wait till the weekend. We got it working tonight even though its not optimal. The hole punch we used wouldnt get down far enough to do the second set of holes so I made them smaller by drilling them out with a phillips head screwdriver. Even though, I got a good flame going and got some water boiling. Pictures at night werent very good so I just made one with the fuel and the SuperCat.  8) As you can see the holes are significantly smaller on the bottom row. Still works, just not optimal. Total cost 5.37 for the fuel and 76 cents for can and a happy cat and a buck for a hole puncher. We got water just to boiling in about 5 minutes before the fuel ran out.
