Any update on Tapatalk access. I would be able to view, use and contribute a lot more if I could use an app like Tapatalk.

this means an entire upgrade of the SMF software the forum runs on. and then updating all of the custom changes we've made.  Mr Bill and I are looking into what would need to be done.

Oh, I know what needs to be done.

It's sorta like THIS BIG but it really will get done... um... real soon now...

I actively contribute a lot to another forum,  multiple times a day, whose content I care about far less than TSP.  It's just possible on mobile with the other forum because theyr'e on tapatalk.  They drug their feet for a while, but now that theyr'e on, I contribute far more and am substantially more connected.  It's not just "more convenient for mobile".  It's *the* best way to use the forum.  Period.

Are there really people in 2015 who don't use their smart phone about 95% more than a desktop machine for social interaction, like forums or facebook?

I appreciate all of the volunteer efforts.  There's no way I could do any of it, and I know that it's a great undertaking.

I just think it needs to be considered that the ROI for time on this project is probably exponentially more beneficial than just about anything that could be done for getting the TSP message out there.  It's the modern forum-equivalent of trying to get a message out without youtube or facebook presence.

I listen to TSP everyday but almost never use the forum.  I don't sit at computers anymore, and I use my phone far less than most people.

Thanks again for all you do to make this forum work.

Agreed.  I don't have the computer time I once did to hang out in forums, but if I could access via Tapatalk, I could do it from my mobile.

I appreciate all of the volunteer efforts.  I maintain some Wordpress sites and doing upgrades w/plugins and customizations in place is not easy.  I know that it's challenging.

Having said that, this thread started in March of 2011.  Any chance "real soon now" means anytime in the foreseeable future :)  Anything we can do to boost the priority?  Do we need a kickstarter campaign?

Um... After I get income taxes finished?

I'm really sorry for the delay.

Is anyone here old enough to remember Jerry Pournelle's repeated use of "Real Soon Now" in his Chaos Manor articles for BYTE Magazine?

Wow, they squeezed that in there to make guns look like a bad thing. Funny thing is when you go to the 1911forum.com site from a mobile device it asks if you want to download the Tapatalk app.  I would think they have more firearm discussions than we do.

Yup, I'm sure there are a lot of forum admins who never read that far down in the license agreement.

I haven't checked, but it's possible that it's a recent change related to their selling ads which appear for Tapatalk users.  Google ads have a similar restriction, and I'm not sure whether it's because of a corporate aversion to firearms, or just a desire to provide a predictable and uniform product to their advertisers.

Agreed, I don't want to get into a situation where they yank our service without warning.  There are some other issues that bother me too, though.  Like, wanting access to our e-mail database -- yes, only so that they can implement certain features, but the wording is vague enough that they could use it for spamming, maybe.  I'm not comfortable doing that with a company whose offices are in Shanghai and Santa Monica.

Sorry, Tapatalk fans.  We will have a new forum theme that should work better on small devices, though.

I'm pretty sure xdtalk.com used it as well, however kudos to the admins for the integrity and forethought you are showing. One of the reasons I feel this is the best forum on the net.

Might try contacting Tapatalk about that little line in the license.

Take a look at their "partners", specifically the "Hunting, Fishing and Firearms" sections.  Seems odd that the license would exclude that group but yet, they've partnered with them?

oh this is great...
What their terms and conditions say:
You agree not to (i) publish, display, disclose, rent, lease, modify, loan, distribute, or create derivative works based on the Service or any part thereof, (ii) reverse engineer, decompile, translate, adapt, or disassemble the Service, including the Plugin, (iii) attempt to create the source code from the object code for the Service or any part thereof, and/or (iv) publish content in or using the Service that (a) violates any applicable law, statute, rule, regulation, ordinance, right of publicity or privacy, (b) promotes violence, the use of firearms, or unlawful subject matter or activities (such as discrimination of protected classes, hate crimes, or copyright circumvention sites), (c) infringes or misappropriates any copyright, patent trademark, trade secret or other proprietary of any third party, or (d) is defamatory, libelous, threatening, deceptive, pornographic or sexually explicit. If you violate this Section, in addition to other rights, we may immediate ban you from the Service and terminate this Agreement.

What I asked:
But how can you have a group of business partners under the section 'Hunting, Fishing & Firearms'? How do you explain this?

The response is:
What is not allowed on Tapatalk are sites that promote use of firearms for unlawful purposes.   Hope that helps.

That's funny, guess they need to get a better team of lawyers to re-write the license agreement.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately,
Quote
Forum Runner works on vBulletin, phpBB, IP.Board, myBB and XenForo forums
but not Simple Machines Forum.

We actually considered (briefly) switching from SMF to myBB or something else.  We came to our senses pretty fast, though.

Well, if the firearms issue is resolved, this one still bothers me, especially the Shanghai/Santa Monica connection.  :jaw-drop:
