It is not a matter of gaps in scientific knowledge.

The problem with this statement is that we don't know what we don't know.

"Belief in _______________ is contrary to knowledge".

Roll back a couple of centuries and you can fill in the blank with;

* a round Earth;
* A heliocentric solar system

Well, you get my point. Maybe contrary to current empirical evidence, but evidence is not knowledge. Empiricism is not the only, or perhaps even the best, epistemology.  I'll stop now before I get myself in trouble as I have been known to

I find it amazing that so many "learned" people can only see one side of things. Even my doctor, an extremely intelligent specialist who is also a professor at University Hospital of Denver and teaches worldwide symposiums on SLE, Raynaud's Syndrome and Sjogrens believes in the healing power of acupuncture. But perhaps I'll ask him on Friday when I go for my appointment if he considers himself learned or not. He might say he's just another dumb hippie but I doubt it.

Everyone has differing opinions on everything from religion to gardening on this forum.  That's what makes this place great.  But just because you don't believe in something doesn't make your opinion the only one and shouldn't preclude respect for one another.

How can you suggest that science hasn't caught up to energy healing yet? We don't need a futuristic energy reading maching to objectively evaluate the results promised by so called energy healers. We know right now that energy healing works the same amount of the time as a placebo. How is that an example of not knowing what we don't know?

And I'm not talking about accupuncture. Accupuncture works better than placebo for some very simple reasons. Not the issue here.

I guess I could tell my patients that atropine will emit healing energy chakra waves to their heart. I mean, science doesn't know everything. Who am I to say that it blocks the flow of acetylcholine? We just don't know what we don't know.

I'll reiterate - I do not have issue with what you practice in your personal life, but the moment you take a dollar from a sick person and promise them real medicine, we have a problem.

For those interested in a podcast that critically evaluates alternative medicine topics, check out:

Beware, his irreverent style will infuriate true believers, but his analysis of the medical literature is outstanding.

Quick point on acupuncture: there have been recent experiments showing that it activates the inflammatory response, including an analgesic affect localized to the needle sight.  This explains why it works at treating minor aches.  It has nothing to do with manipulating energy, and it doesn't matter whether an acupuncturist or a football player places the needles.
I have to ask how activating an inflammatory response is not manipulating energy?  I think that you are tying in the view that energy has to be something like electricity.  As Jack has said many times in many of his podcasts, there are forms of energy that don't look anything like what "we" typically see as energy.

I'm not really a believer in these types of healing, but I do feel that there are many alternative treatments that do work.  But an inflammatory response is the closest thing to energy manipulation that I can think of.

If it feels good do it. If your (insert malady here) goes away when someone (Insert alternative treatment here) then get it done and by all means pay for it. But I think the original bent of this thread was about claims that are made by practitioners that X does A, and can't produce proof. If you have a practitioner that has done something wonderful and can prove it, tell them about the million dollars thing. I'm sure they can use the money. Just because you hung a turtle around your neck and cancer went away, doesn't mean the turtle's special. Any number of other more realistic reasons could very well be the reason for the cancer going away. Maybe you just beat it? Maybe it was misdiagnosed? Maybe (GASP!) the doctor lied and you never even had cancer. A lying jerkwad is far more probably than magical energy that pours from my hand into the tumor making it go back to the tumor dimension. I run into many lying jerkwads every day. I myself have been a lying jerkwad. I have also been trained in energy work, and it's fake.

What about all the believers scoffing at my most sacred and fundamental belief in reason? Should they not also be edited?
I only call my closest friends names, and am also a hippie;)

Morning Sunshine
When you were a little person did you ever pretend you were a jet airplain, or a cop? You can still do that. And it feels just as real when you do. I don't know exactly what your brother was doing when he was draining bad energy from your arms, I just know in 8 years I've never done it to any of my clients, and they rave to their friends anyway.

...& with that, I get the last word.  At least for a while.
