250 gallon aquaponics system in a shed.
« on: March 16, 2011, 07:01:00 PM »
I am building an 8 x 18 foot shed shortly and plan on having about 8 cages with Florida Whites in them. Wondering if I could include a 250 gallon tank I acquired and have an aquaponics set up with fluorescent grow lights and two 250 watt aquarium heaters for the tank. I will have a rocket mass stove in the shed, and it will be insulated, but it gets -30F occasionally. Is this feasible? Would the moisture be a problem for the rabbits?

Thanks,

John

  • It's the dog....not the gun.

No idea, but I'm hoping to dabble in aquaponics once I get my shed built.

Keep us posted with pics.

Dunno about the rabbits side of things, but I do know that doing AP under fluoros is tough. You can grow leafy green things, but you won't be getting very good fruiting yields. I did have sage grow like crazy in a closet AP system though.

Are you building the shed yourself?

If so, you might be able to incorporate a couple of deign tweaks to get around various problems that might arise from having a tank in the same area with rabbits.

What initially comes to mind is building the southern side as a greenhouse and using the 250 gallon tank as thermal mass as well as the fish tank.

As for the rabbits and humidity, I'm not sure about that, but once again if you're building the shed you can keep the rabbit cages separated from the aquaponics area.

Keep us informed, I'd like to see what you do with this project!

If it gets that cold the air is probably pretty dry so an aquaponics system may actually help maintain a normal humidity level during the cold months.

That question actually made me wonder about using ducks in aquaponics . . . anyone have any experience with that?

There's an old duck-a-ponics thread on BYAP. As I recall, it works just fine.

Rather than run grow lights you may opt for running the water lines through the shed wall and setting up the grow trays outside in natural sunlight?

You could also look into getting transparent glazing and siding and let that sunlight right into the whole shed. I don't know what you're using for a 250 gallon tank, but I use IBC containers. They hold 1000 liters or a little more than 250 gallons (written right on the side). I get them for free from my local sand quarry. Might want to check that out if you can.

That's what I'm looking for, IBC containers.  Unfortunately, they are not always easy to come by.  Once I track down a source in my area, I'm going to get several.
