Plastic Taste From My Berkey
« on: March 18, 2011, 05:23:03 PM »
I recently got a Royal Berkey, washed everything, primed the filters (including fluoride filters), and installed. The filtered water has a strange burnt plastic kind of taste to it. This is very different than both my tap water and my water filtered by a Brita.

Any ideas on how to fix this? It is slightly less bad after removing the fluoride components like I saw in another thread.

Please allow at least 5-10 gallons or more to pass through, as the taste should change.

Mine has a sort of metallic taste that hits the sides of my mouth. I hope it disappears in 5 gallons.

After running 20-30 gallons through the system, the taste has slightly improved. But it's still like drinking from a tire.

Pretty unhappy with my purchase so far.

Belated update:

After much forgetfulness from me, I finally called up Millennium Products and ordered some new filters. They were covered under the warranty. I received them about 2 weeks later, installed them, and everything is working perfectly now. I dropped the old filters in the mail (return label provided) and that's it.

There must have been a bad batch of filters made because when I called there was an automated message saying, "If you are calling to replace filters..."

After 6gal the taste went away. It tastes like boring plain water :) just how I like it.

After each 2gal I would clean the bottle bucket. I noticed a white residue on inside on the bucket that I would clean out (I assume this is from the fluoride filters). The residue would be less and less after each 2gal flushing and cleaning.

That said, love my Berkey. It works great.
Only wish install/setup instructions were better.
