Alternative stuffing question
« on: May 26, 2011, 02:17:24 PM »
I am thinking about making a traditional meditation mat or cushion (I believe it's called a zufu), and the tutorials I've come across all call for buckwheat hulls as stuffing.

Does anyone know where I could find that cheaply? The sites I've found that specifically cater to the Zen crown are SUPER expensive.

Alternatively, do you think I could use white rice instead? Would cause problems over time? I'm not at all worried about keeping it "traditional" or not. My only thought about the rice would be that I'd have to be sure not to get it wet....in which case I've thought about lining the cushion with a waterproof barrier. But am I missing anything else.

I am thinking I'll practice and use regular cushion stuffing for the first one. I'm sure I'll mess it up the first few times since it calls for pleats, which I've never done  ;) Any advice would be appreciated!
